Looks like the Old Munich opened in early May 2019. Simply must make it down there soon. Many old-world places are vanishing and it is a way to honor Hans' and his life to see it continue. I never met him, but his spirit shall ring there as long as it is open..

Wife and I have driven by the Old Munich Inn and wanted to stop in since she is German born, but never managed to.
It appears that Hans did well in life providing a friendly place for so many.
We are sorry to have missed Hans, but hope the new management can start up, if not already and we'll try to stop by.

Hans was a great guy and the Old Munich was (and still is) a great bar. Had lots of fun in the Old Munich in the late 80's and stopped in occasionally now and then to have a couple of beers and say hi to Hans. Hans had a fantastic personality, was quite the character and was always there because he lived above the Old Munich. RIP Hans, you will be missed by lots and lots of people.

Just learned the news here in Australia and so very sad
Hans was one of life's great characters, warm, generous and loyal, funny, expressive and sincere
He taught me a lot about life as well as how to drink Jäger with Asbach and I will never forget flying with him to his Moms 100th birthday party in Germany where he duly arrived in a helicopter with 100 red roses
Hans you truly were a legend. In Chicagoland and beyond, captured by the Russians but escaped and eventually built a new life in the US through hard work, drive and a true appreciation of people
I am so grateful to have known you dear mate
Yours ever

Very sad to see this, but at the same time glad I ran across it.We had an interesting relationship, for many years.Playing pool with Hans vs 2 guys,I get in a fight with one,he tosses me out for 8 years and finally lets me back in,2 funny. My last time seeing him was having drinks at his favorite place, bought him a few and had a nice time. This makes me very sad, thanks for putting up with me dear Hans.

Hans was always so nice to my friends and I. He was very generous, making lunch every day for everyone in the bar, and handing out gifts at Christmas, also we loved the pool tournaments he had every year for the girls. We all had such a good time at Old Munich Inn In the 80s, Hans was one of a kind! RIP my friend. You will be missed.
