Gwendolyn Trindl Obituary

Born in Chicago, Gwen attended Northwestern University, School of Speech. She was engaged to Jack Trindl at The Rock, and their 65 year love affair began.

Gwen served on all Winnetka Council committees, Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals. She served as Northwest Municipal Conference President and was the first woman President of Winnetka. Gwen was instrumental in ending the Winnetka alcohol sales prohibition era and early PACE proponent. The Chamber of Commerce named her 1979 Woman of the Year. Gwen dedicated years to the League of Women Voters. Most of all, she was a stellar wife, Mom and Grandma.

Gwen is greatly missed by her children Kris, Chip, Eric; her 5 grandchildren, Nicholas (Katherine), Kelsey (Sam), Olivia, Carlee and John and by her 3 great grandchildren Cooper, Peter and Nolan, and preceded in death by husband Jack and son Geoffrey. She left this world on November 9, 2022, but her positivity, intelligence and spirit will live on in us forever.

Donations in Gwen's name to your choice of either Native American Rights Fund https://narf.org/support-us/ or Doctors Without Borders https://donate.doctorswithoutborders.org/c7-give-now are greatly appreciated.

Gwen was a force in Winnetka. She moved here from Glenview where she was politically active. In Winnetka her passion for village government continued unabated. She was the first woman Village President of Winnetka, and served on more committees than I can count, including Plan Commission, Home Rule Committee, Northwest Municipal Conference where she was President and one of the early advocates for creating PACE (the suburban bus and regional transit part of the RTA).

It would take a deep dive into her rich and varied life to draw a clearer picture of her humanity and accomplishments for those who didn't know her. With a leadership style that was firm yet consultative, she brought everyone along until we all ended up on the same page. An example is leading the Winnetka Community House through one of its major strategic planning efforts, involving staff, board members, volunteers, users and village residents in the process. She was serious and thoughtful, but also ready for fun, with a great sense of humor and twinkling blue eyes.

In terms of the greatest generation - or at least, the Korean War generation - we've had some major losses lately including Gwen, Joan Levy, and Pat Balsamo. They were all good friends. An underlying theme is their exceptional service and achievement, combined with personal modesty. I don't think there was an ounce of ego among them.

I just learned today that Gwen had died. She was a role model me and to so many others and a major contributor to the betterment of society - always with an eye on equality. I followed her as Director of The Volunteer Talent Pool, now known as the Volunteer Center of N.E. Metro Chicago. She was a champion and a guide for me. Peace to her soul and her family. Much fondness, Barb Tubekis
