Guy Wilcox Obituary

Guy Hartley Wilcox, MD, passed away, peacefully, on June 27, 2024.

Guy was born on August 3, 1941, in Utica, NY. He lived a full and rich life, one engaged in farming, intellectual and spiritual devotion and a long and storied career in medicine. He was a man dedicated to family, to ideas, to curiosity and to the pursuit of excellence. He moved through the world with a spirit of wonder and in a way that demonstrated a profound sense of care, honor and love. To say that he will be missed beyond measure by his family and friends would barely scratch the surface of what he means to us.

Guy loved being a physician. His dedication to the healing arts began when he was a student at the Louisville Theological Seminary, during which time he worked as a hospital chaplain. He graduated with a Masters in Theology before going on to graduate with his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, in 1973, then completing residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Infectious Disease. He practiced primarily in Utica, working at various times in private practice, at the Sitrin Health Care Center, as the Medical Director of St. Luke's, as faculty in the St. Elizabeth's Family Medicine Residency and he ended his career caring for patients as the Medical Director at the Masonic Care Community. He was also a founding board member of Hospice & Palliative Care of New Hartford.

From the time of his diagnosis, in 2008, Guy navigated the profound challenges of Parkinson's Disease with grace, strength and intellectual rigor. We are indebted to Dr. Dorsey, Guy's neurologist at the University of Rochester, who cared for him in a partnership of mutual respect and admiration. Guy wrote passionately about his experience with Parkinson's in his memoirs. He also wrote reflectively and honestly about his life growing up on a farm.

Guy met his wife, Mary Mizzi Wilcox, in 1978. They built a house on Mallory Road overlooking his family's dairy farm. Guy and Mary also built a life together, raising three adored children and enjoying, above all, traveling the world together after Guy's retirement. In falling in love with Mary, Guy brought magic into his life. Mary was a steadfast, creative, nurturing partner who inspired Guy immeasurably and who was unfailing in her devotion to him as his Parkinson's progressed.

Guy is survived by Mary; their three children, Allen, Allison and Andrew Wilcox; as well as his children-in-law, Olga Karmansky Wilcox, Will Connell and Elizabeth Stahlmann; and his grandchildren, Fiona Rose Wilcox and Vivienne Rose Connell. He is also survived by his siblings, Gary Wilcox, Beverly Batdorf and Gregg Wilcox and their families, including Gary's wife, Julie, Beverly's husband, Kirby and Gregg's wife, Jo; as well as nieces and nephews, Steven, Craig, Phillip and Joel Gordon, Seth Batdorf, Katelyn Foltz, Emily Krape, Paula Shaffer and David Badtorf. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Janet Mizzi; sister-in-law, Janet Thomas and her sons, John and Dan Hinman.

Guy was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Florence Wilcox; sister, Barbara Gordon; and his dear Aunt Betty.

Our most heartfelt thanks goes out to Guy's caregivers, including Lily, Georgia, Tianna, Ashley, Stephanie and Wally, as well as the staff at Siegenthaler Center, particularly Laurie, Sarah and Crystal, who cared for Guy in his final days with profound tenderness. We will always be grateful.

The Funeral will be on Monday, July 8 at 11 AM in the Thompkins Chapel at the Masonic Care Community in Utica. The family will receive friends following the Service, in lieu of calling hours. A reception will be held at the family's barn on Sessions Road following the service.

In Guy's memory, please consider donations to the Siegenthaler Center or the Masonic Care Community.

Arrangements are in the care of Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, New Hartford. Online messages of sympathy may be left at www.fwefh.com.

Guy and I were friends in high school mainly through our church youth groups which did things together. During college we would connect when returning home for breaks.
I taught school for 35 years taking a break after 4 to go to seminary. Guy shared with me his seminary experience which I later found to be what I was experiencing any decided to pursue another path as he did. His insight was very helpful.
I remember one going to his place during a snowstorm and my car getting stuck in a snow bank close to his house. I walked to his place and he got a tractor to pull me free.

To the Wilcox family,
I was very saddened to hear of dr. Wilcox passing. He has been one of few people I hold with entire respect and admiration and trust. I first met Dr Wilcox at the West Winfield medical center back in the late 70´s . Then in 80 he finally said.... Let´s check this ....how unlikely it would have been what he was thinking, But yes .. it was and after 4 months of negative testing, we finally had an answer!!!! From then on, he was like the God of medicine for me... so much so , that in early 83 , my child was having an issue, 4 days back and forth to testing at St. Luke´s.
So in the later evening, feeling stressed and whatever, I figured..... I can call dr Wilcox at his home, I mean he must have remembered me.. there was a babysitter and she took my information and I never thought I´d get a phone call!!! God bless this man, he calls me and tries to reassure me of what action to take..
I wasn´t even his patient, just someone that had been, and was bold enough to ask his advise.
I have forever since held this man and his wife in the highest regard, such respect I´ve had for him. It breaks my heart that he was short changed out of the life he and his family have waited to share all these years... they must have needed another saint in heaven,
Please know, I will always remember with love and pride the great man Dr. Wilcox was, his memory will live on, for all he has done for so so many. God Bless you Mary, and kids for sharing your husband and Dad with so many during your " family life" ... He one one of the " Good ones"

Dear Wilcox Family,
I worked with Dr. Wilcox at the Masonic Care Community for many years. I attended his funeral service at MCC today, and felt compelled to let you know how uplifting the whole service was. His children portrayed their deep love, respect and devotion for him, while sharing things about him we may have never known. We only knew how kind, giving, warm and brilliant he was. I have so many memories of him but the one thing that stands out for me, is whenever he was talking to a resident, as you know he was very tall, but I would see him bending down on his knee as he talked to them in their wheelchairs to get down to their level, so they did not need to strain to look up, and he always looked them gently in the eye while holding their hand. I am so blessed to have known him and to have attended the service today. I came away thinking that we were truly in the presence of greatness simply by knowing Dr. Guy Wilcox. My heart felt sympathies to your family.

I met Guy when I was believed I was a successful adult, yet he humbled me by the greatness of his presence and set me on an even better path toward being a positive participant in my life, and the lives of those around me.

As an RN for over 40 years I crossed paths with Dr. Wilcox. In my early days as a nurse I worked in all 3 hospitals. Dr Wilcox was a brilliant man who was always knowledgeable, polite and you could tell he loved his patients. My last part of my career was spent as a quality assurance nurse consultant and Masonic Home was one of my accounts. I crossed paths with him there as well. This community has lost a doctor that is irreplaceable. He will be missed by many. If there is a heaven he surely gained his wings. To his wife and family I pray you have comfort in knowing how loved and respected he was by so many. Rest in peace Dr. Wilcox you will be missed. They dont make Drs. like you any more. Our community will miss you.

Guy and I went to high school together, sang in a quartet with our then girlfriends and then reunited as physicians in our local community. I´m reminded of a most apropos quotation. "A little knowledge of science makes you an atheist, in depth knowledge of science makes you a believer in God." Louis Pasteur
That was Guy. RIP my friend

In one's entire life one seldom meets a man with the high moral character of Dr. Guy Wilcox. His skills went far beyond that of medicine. He was truly a Man of Letters. Men of this sort come along every 100 years or longer. Dr. Wilcox was a throwback when medicine was based on a sound knowledge of all of the sciences, the arts, and the humanities. If there is a Heaven, Guy is most certainly there. For the rest of us still walking the planet, we should all try to emulate Guy Wilcox....we can only try.
