George Barrett Obituary

North Reading, MA-George R. Barrett, 80, of Cabot Road, North Reading, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004 at the Chelsea Soldiers Home. He was born in Portsmouth, NH on Aug. 24, 1923 the son of Harry and Florence (Hunt) Barrett.

He was a carpenter for Ralph O'Porter in Wellesley, MA working in residential contstruction for over 40 years. Mr. Barrett had lived in North Reading since 1959. He was a member of the VFW in North Reading. Mr. Barrett served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII in the 1053 Signal Co. He enjoyed working with wood especially home projects. He also liked yard work, golf, reading, and Sunday drives. His wife, Barbara T. (MacDonald) Barrett, died in 1985.

He was also predeceased by brothers and sisters, Horace and Harry Barrett, Elizabeth Palmer, and Pauline O'Neil. Members of his family surviving include a son, George R. Barrett, Jr. of Nashua, NH; two daughters, Maureen L. Nye of North Reading, MA and Barbara A. Heselton of Reading, MA; five grandchildren, Shawn M. Nye, Deanna L. Longo, Keith M. Heselton, Jennifer L. Nye, and Matthew D. Heselton; two great grandsons, William M. Hoole and Will Longo; six brothers, Robert W. of New London, NH, Fred A. of Franklin, MA, Donald L. of New London, NH, Verne E. of Elkins, NH, Sherman H. of Penacook, NH, and Bruce A. of Andover, NH; five sisters, Ruth E. Gagnon of Goshen, NH, Pearl M. Fitzgerald of Naples, FL, Jane A. Shackett of Newport, NH, Eleanor F. Hurd of Satellite Beach, FL, and Mary Jean Wibel of Omaha, NE; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at The First Baptist Church of New London, NH. Burial will be in Old Main Street Cemetery, New London in the spring.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., 1001 Elm Street, Suite 106, Manchester, NH 03101 or to the Soldiers Home, 91 Crest Avenue, Chelsea, MA 02150 or to the Soldiers Home, Holyoke, MA 01040.
