Genevieve Sipich Obituary

Sipich, Genevieve "Miss Val" Miss Val taught two generations of Bridgeport children to dance. 86 years with us, preceded in death by her husbands, Edward Brunell and Nicholas Sipich. The dearly beloved mother of daughter, Edwena Brunell; son, Val Brunell and his wife, Magda. Dearest Nonie to Laura, Julie and Emma Brunell, great-grand Nonie to Saskia Brunell. As of ten years old, Genevieve Gaspardo left the small coal mining town of Wilsonville, Illinois to travel on weekends to Springfield, Illinois, to take dance lessons and live with Mildred Caskey, her teacher and mentor. As a teenager, she came to Chicago to attend and graduate from Austin High School while dancing in night clubs. Genevieve Val's professional career grew as she performed in various night clubs on Rush Street and throughout the mid-west in the late 1930's and 40's, the Club Alabam being one of her favorites. In the mid 40's, she met and married Edward Brunell, had her children, settled into domestic life. In the 50's, Edward became ill and passed away leaving Gen to raise an eight year and a six year old alone. During this time, she began her own dance school, Val's Dance Studio in Bidgeport. Gen married Nick Sipich in 1964. For the many years the two of them worked in the community: Gen teaching, Nick creating sets and driving. Together they gave of themselves for musicals and the Girl's cheerleading squad for De LaSalle High School. They brought many dancing acts to entertain veterans at Hines Hospital. Miss Val also trained students who were chosen yearly for the Nutcracker Ballet at Christmas. She also put on annual dance recitals from the early 50's until 1991. Nick passed away in 1990, and Gen retired in 1992. She spent nine happy years writing letters, reading two daily papers, keeping house and spoiling her grandchildren. Unfortunately, she suffered a series of strokes and Alzheimer's Disease between 2001 and 2004. For the last three years of her life, her loving, selfless and constant caretaker was Edwarda Mysliwiec, to whom the family wishes to extend its most sincere gratitude. We would also like to thank the workers from Vitas Hospice for their special care. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Miss Val's name to the Ballet Chicago Studio Co., 218 S. Wabash, Chicago, 60604, 312-251-8838. Funeral Tuesday, 9:15 a.m., from Michael Coletta Sons Funeral Home, 544 W. 31st St. (formerly Blake-Lamb Bridgeport) to St. James Church, 2940 S. Wabash. Mass 10 a.m. Interment St. Mary. Visitation Monday only 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. 312-225-8500

Miss Val, I am so sorry we lost touch in the early 70's. You and Nick were wonderful friends, and I will never forget either of you. Thank you!

Thank you Miss Val for teaching us so much. I have so many memories of our time in her studio. We danced at Hines Hospital, Harrison High School, and The Martinique! In one act, that included most of my cousins, I was Miss Ohio, I think. Also, in these recital extravaganzas, I remember dancing as a firefly, a dutch girl, an Indian girl, a pilgrim, and a baseball player. Our costumes were always gorgeous. We tapped to "I'm Just Wild About Harry", "Ain't She Sweet", "Turkey in the Straw" and "Teacher's Pet". When I took a Ballet I class in college to fulfill a P.E. credit, throughout the semester the instructor complimented me on how I pointed my toe, my bar work, my deep plies and how I held out my arms so fracefully. To myself I whispered, "Well, I had Miss Val." A few years ago I watched my four year old daughter tap on stage to "Lollipop, Lollipop". Weeping and proud, I thanked Miss Val again for helping me pass on the appreciation of ballet and dance. Thank you.

I was a student of Miss Val's in the 60's and thanks to her I still have a love of dancing. I remember her special way of encouraging all her students to keep on dancing. I remember how special she made us feel at recitals. She can now relax and watch the Angels dance. Thank you Miss Val.

Dear Family of Miss Val,

It is with a saddened haeart that I have read of Miss Val's Passing. I am 51 years old and never will forget the dance classes I took at her studio as will my sister and cousins. Many times at reunions we look on our old recital pictures and laugh and tear up. What a fun memory. I did go on to study dance at many other studios in the Chicago land area, but can honestly say that I do not remember any of my instructors names or personality. I will always be grateful for that time and the gift of confidence that I received at the gracious hand of Miss Val.

Thank you,

Claudia Grizzi Coveny

What an incredible lady! I will never forget my Saturday mornings at Miss Val’s Dance Studio. We would wait in the outer offices and look at the beautiful photos of Miss Val when she was a performer. She was so graceful, refined and an inspiration to all of us. Thank you Miss Val for giving me a better appreciation for ballet and dance in general…I will never forget your kindness and patience especially when trying to teach me a new dance step nor will I ever forget to point my toes.
