Gary Klos Obituary

Klos, Gary A. 72, died unexpectedly Monday, August 27 in O'Fallon, IL. Born May 13, 1940 in Chicago Heights, he graduated from Bloom High School in 1958 and went on to graduate from Valparaiso University. He worked his entire professional career as a Federal Special Agent for the Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Office of the Inspector General where he worked persistently for patient rights until he retired in 2002. As an Illinois High School Association official, he enjoyed many years of calling balls and strikes on the baseball field along with blowing the whistle on the basketball court with good friends. Although he loved traveling with his wife, family, and good friends, Gary was happiest at home relaxing by the pool, working the crossword and solving Ken-Kens. Gary was a devoted husband to Carol (nee Marthaler) and loving father to Ellen (John) Dini of Mount Prospect, Jeff (Anne) Klos of LaGrange, Kevin (Kiffin) Klos of Austin, TX, Tim (Nora) Klos of Chicago, Mary Beth (Jeffrey) Riepe of O'Fallon, IL, and Amy (Adam) Dunwoody of O'Fallon, IL. He was adored by his grandchildren, Caroline, Daniel and Matthew Klos, Elizabeth and Brian Dini, Claire and Katherine Riepe, and Jacob Klos; Dear brother to Sally (Joseph) Klyczek of Chicago Heights. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luvurne and Norbert Klos. Gary will be fondly missed by many dear friends, old and new. In later years, he will be remembered for his sense of humor, optimism and perseverance in the face of various health challenges. Visitation Thursday, August 30, 5-8pm and Friday, August 31, 8-9am at Heartland Memorial Center, 7151 183rd St, Tinley Park. Funeral Friday, August 30, 10am St. Agnes Church, 1501 Chicago Rd, Chicago Heights. Interment Assumption Cemetery, Glenwood. Carol, I was really very saddened to hear about Gary. He was a very good friend during our teenage years. He will be missed by many, I am sure.

I believe it was still DHEW when I first met Gary; later to become DHHS. Gary & his comrads in PIB then OIG always had a great sense of humor. It's been some time since I've seen him and those comrads, but glad they were there to put a smile on a face when it was needed. Gary and all of you are in my prayers.

I worked with Gary many many years ago. He was dedicated to his profession, to his friends, and he had a spirit of fairness and compassion for all. He will be missed.

I've known Gary since 1971 when he worked at SS program center and came to Valparaiso where I was manager of the SS office. We competed in recruiting VU grads to work for SS. He always had a great smile. To his family, sorry for your loss, he was too young.

I worked with Gary years ago in Chicago. He was a great guy and I thoroughly enjoyed our trips together. Even though I haven't seen him in a number of years I will still miss him.

To Carol and the family - Gary and I worked and played together since the early '70's. We didn't always agree about sports and politics, but we never forgot we were good friends. We'll really miss him in December when the geezers get together for a holiday celebration and on our annual September Las Vegas trip. He loved the sports, the food, and the passing scene there.
