Gale Doggett Obituary

Gale J. "Curly" Doggett of Anchorage, AK, and former Sidney, Nebraska resident and business owner, passed away at his home, Thursday, January 26, 2012. He was 85 years old.

Funeral services will be held in Anchorage at Legacy Funeral Home, Kehl's Chapel, 11621 Old Seward Highway, Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 3 p.m.

Funeral services will be held in Sidney, Nebraska in the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel, Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.

A memorial is being established in Curly's name.

Gale James "Curly" Doggett, the son of Harlow Harry and Osa Mae (Garretson) Doggett, was born on December 24, 1926 at York, NE. He attended country schools in the Nebraska Sandhills. Shortly after his mother's death he moved to Sunol, NE to live with aunt and uncle, Dolly and Irwin Caldwell. On February 14, 1948, Curly married the love of his life Erma Crosby in Sidney, NE. Following his education, Curly became a truck driver. In the mid 1950s, he started Salvage Yards in Oxford and Sidney, NE, before starting his own trucking business. Curly lived in Nebraska until 1966 and for brief periods he lived in Broomfield, CO, Clarkston, WA and Smithfield, UT, before moving to Alaska in 1975. He was self employed in the Trucking Industry in Alaska until his retirement in 1988. He and his wife Erma extended their generosity to many people throughout their years together.

Curly's greatest love was auto racing. He was inducted into the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame and Colorado BCRA Hall of Fame. He competed in NASCAR races in eight states and Mexico.

Survivors include his wife: Erma of Anchorage; (3) children: Rex(Marcy) Doggett of Spokane, WA, Jack (Arminda) Doggett of Anchorage and Mike Doggett of Newhall, CA; (5) brothers: Dick Doggett of Burwell, NE, Bob (Pat) Doggett of Lakeside, NE, Jim (Judy) Doggett of Lincoln, NE, Harry Doggett and special friend Leota of Rose, NE and John (Cathy) Doggett of Stanton, NE; (2) Sisters: Alice Rice and Joane Owen both of Omaha; (11) grandchildren; (4) great-grandchildren, sister-in-law: Shirley Oliverius of Sidney, ME and many extended family members and friends.

Curly was preceded in death by his parents (3) sons: Tim, Terry and Brett, (1) granddaughter: Kari, (1) brother: Max and wife Bonnie, (1) sister-in law: Elaine and (2) brothers-in-law: Jim Oliverius and Bob Rice.

So sorry for your loss. Am from Oxford, NE and when I was 12 to 15 years old I used to ride to the races with Curly when he drove Dr. Bentleys Sprint car. Was also there the day he got burned really bad in Wakeeney, KS. Once again our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Erma, Jack & all of Curly's family,
So sorry to hear Curly is no longer with us! What a guy! A very special & kind man who will forever truck in spirit! I missed visiting with Curly & Erma at the Chugiak PO when they moved into Anchorage but was able to get a 'hello' message thru Jack from time to time if we happened to be working the same job. Hold your memories close. God Bless!
