Frank Rosen Obituary

Rosen, Frank Livingston Frank Rosen, longtime labor leader and political activist, passed away on November 28, 2016 at the age of 91 at The Selfhelp Home where he had been living for the past 3 1/2 years. Rosen took part in many of the seminal moments in Chicago history. These included studying nuclear physics under Enrico Fermi, fighting to defend civil liberties in the McCarthy era, the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements, electing Harold Washington as mayor, and organizing against the unregulated power of utility companies, all while helping thousands of members of his union, the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, struggle on a daily basis for decent wages and benefits and dignity on the job. Rosen served as the elected President of UE District 11 from 1976 until his retirement in 1990. He was married to Lois Anne Rosen (nee Schafer) for 47 years until her untimely death from cancer in 1996. Rosen is survived by his wife, Bernice Selden Rosen; his children and their spouses, Rachel DeGolia (Peter), Rebecca Balanoff (James), Carl Rosen (Josie Yanguas); grandchildren, Ruth DeGolia, Leah DeGolia Kirkpatrick, Sarah Balanoff Piland, Paul Balanoff, David Balanoff and Diana Rosen, and two great-grandchildren, Emerson and Genevieve Piland. A memorial will be held on February 4, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at The Selfhelp Home, 908 W Argyle St., Chicago, IL 60640. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Selfhelp Home (SelfHelpHome.org), Circle Pines Center (circlepinescenter.org) or U.S. Labor Against the War (www.uslaboragainstwar.org).

Frank and Lois were activists and organizers but since I lived upstairs from the Rosens and as a kid, I knew them as Aunt Lois and Uncle Frank. They were always inviting me to share meals and play time with their family. Frank was good at finding creative ways to keep me in check when I was out of control during play. But,sometimes, he would simply raise his voice a notch and would call out: "Steverino, (his nickname for me) calm down." Frank did a lot for the neighborhood kids that would congregate in our backyard. He brought back huge wooden spools from UE that we would roll up and down the yard. We had a tree in the back yard that we use to pull crab apples down from and throw them at unsuspecting children down below. We never got in trouble for that but I think Frank and Lois Anne knew what was going on.

Very sorry to hear of Frank's passing. The workingclass has lost a staunch leader and advocate. The workingclass needs its own political party more than ever.

The Canter's and the Rosen's go so far back, and with such fond memories. I remember thanksgiving at your home (chocolate cream pie from under the stairs) I remember our parents sitting around my home and just the joy that was all around them. Our father's friendship ran very deep as brothers. I can see them all now just sitting around planning another rally. Thoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family. Anna

I remember Frank and Lois from when I was very small, when we all lived in the Gage Park area. My mom, Lucille, was very close with Lois over the years. Thank you, Frank, for your activism in a neighborhood that desperately cried out for it. My condolences to Bernice, and to the kids and grandkids.
