Apantaku, Dr. Frank Olu

Dr. Frank Olu Apantaku passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at the age of 75, from multiple myeloma. He was surrounded by his beloved daughters and two of his sisters. Frank was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on August 20, 1946. Frank attended Colby College in Maine (Class of 1971) and was awarded an IBM Watson Fellowship upon graduation. Frank went to Northwestern Medical School and completed his surgery residency at Chicago Medical School, having done a cardiothoracic surgery rotation at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Frank was a renowned trauma surgeon at South and West Side hospitals - choosing the license plate TRAUMA1 - and medical educator in Chicago for 40 years. His colleagues remembered him as a humble, reliable, and compassionate surgeon, who was always ready to help. Frank estimated that he saved and impacted thousands of lives during his four decades of work in Chicago hospitals. He believed "to whom much is given, much will be required," and showed that through his generosity to his family, friends, and the broader Chicagoland community. Dr. Frank Olu Apantaku is survived by his three daughters, Elyse, Elora, and Erisa; and his four grandchildren.
