Bud's Eulogy

December 18, 2004

What Can You Say About Grandpa Bud?

There was more to him than most of us know. We did know that Bud enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1947, when he was 16 years old. We learned much more by reading the letters he wrote home to his family. We discovered a whole different life that Bud had lived that we were unaware of until now.

We knew he was proud of being a Marine, and now it’s clearer to us why. He spent two years as a sea-going Marine serving on the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea. By the age of eighteen he had been around the world twice. In 1950, Bud participated in The Landing at Inchon, one of the most daring assaults in the history of the United States. He was also in the first battle for Seoul and the Battle of the Chosen Reservoir.35,000 Marines were surrounded by 100,000 enemy troops. Bud was a very brave man and a man of few words. In a letter to his mother dated September 20, 1950 he writes, “You’ll notice that under the date I put the place I’m at in Korea. Of course you’ve heard of Seoul. Well we’re not exactly in Seoul but we’re sitting in the mountains right outside of it. We’ve been driving pretty hard and I suppose tomorrow we will go into the city. From where I’m sitting it looks like the 4th of July is being celebrated in the city. Navy planes have been dive bombing the place all day and our artillery have been just about flattening the place. I can’t really tell you much about what’s been going on here because it’s not the kind of thing people talk about.”

These were the experiences that shaped Bud as a young man. This was at a time when most young men his age were graduating from high school.

After his honorable discharge he entered DePaul University. It was there that he met the cutest cheerleader on the team, named Rita. My grandma fell hard for those sparkling blue eyes and the rest is history. Bud and Rita married and had four children in the next four years.

His years in the Marines taught him the benefits of a healthy routine. Bud loved his routine. For years he worked out daily at the Oak Park YMCA playing handball. In recent years he worked out at the club and listened to Sinatra while he walked. In the summertime Bud loved to have a cold one while sitting in the sun reading a book.

Bud and Rita’s grandchildren have brought them great joy. Bud loved to tease Kelly and Meghan constantly and he loved going to Jimmy, Patrick and Jack’s football games. Matthew and Beau loved to wipe off his kisses.

Bud was our father, our grandfather, our husband, and our friend. We love him and will truly miss him. Our entire family would like to thank you for your gracious support and the love shown to us in our time of sorrow.

Bud was a very charming man. Quick with a warm welcoming smile and engaging Irish eyes. He could always be counted on for a good story and was a joy to be around at family gatherings. My thoughts and prayers are with Rita and the rest of the Brady clan.
