Eunice Domina Obituary

Domina, Eunice Lucille (nee Sancken) Age 95, poet, birder and voracious reader, passed away on November 26, 2018. She was born to Albert and Carrie Sancken on March 11, 1923 in Livingston County, Illinois. Eunice told wonderful stories of growing up on their farm with her 12 siblings and of attending a one-room schoolhouse. She graduated from Mennonite School of Nursing and served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during WWII, hoping to travel the world. Instead, she was stationed in Wisconsin where G.I. Francis (Frank) Domina attracted her with his interest in books. They married in 1945 and remained married until his death in 1988. She enjoyed a 23 year nursing career at Little Company of Mary Hospital. Post-retirement she published a number of poems in local papers, perfected her crossword puzzle skills and amused family and friends by sending lively cards, emails and newspaper clippings, often annotated with red pen. She continued to find joy in gardening, walking in the woods, bird watching, reading, volunteering and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a longtime resident of Oak Lawn and a member of Mount Greenwood Lutheran Church. Eunice will be remembered for her humor, love of learning and extensive owl collection. She is survived by her daughter, Gwen Strutzenberg; sons, Michael (Meryl) and Frank (Cheryl); grandchildren, Beth, Natasha, Rebecca, Christopher, Natalie and Alden; and great-grandchildren, Henry and Gemma. She is also survived by her sisters, Carol, Esther and Lois. Eunice was preceded in death by her daughter, Adrienne and by 9 of her siblings. A memorial service will be held January 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Greenwood Lutheran Church, Chicago. Memorial contributions may be made to her church or to forestpreservefoundation.org.
