I have wonderful memories of my Godfather and “Great-Uncle Gene.” You see, he was a “Great-Uncle” because he was the brother of my Grandmother, Mary Ostry.
Uncle Gene always was impeccably dressed. He bought his suits from a store in Chicago called Capper and Capper. His shoes were always polished.
I can remember having many dinners at Auntie Stephanie and Uncle Gene’s home. Their home was so tiny that when our family gathered, we had to eat in shifts. I can remember all the “Aunties” rushing around – serving tons of great Polish food – when everyone was finished eating all the “Aunties” would wash, and dry ALL the dishes and pots. LINEN dishtowels were used to dry the dishes. All the “Uncles” would talk and tell jokes. The laughter emanating from the living room was a memory I will always treasure.
