I had the distinct pleasure of inviting Father Watrin to dinner in 1980 at Kathmandu. I knew very little about him, I learned after the fact of his many accomplishments. Even so during this dinner I sensed something special about him.

Fr. Watrin was our English Literature Teacher at GAA during our O'Level-1983. I volunteered in his Gongabu heathcare and house building mission with Rev. Fr. Chambers who was our role model for scouting. Influenced by their selfless services - I put my son into Cub Scouting at New Jersey/Fords. My respect to those great social activists who proved their life by doing and sharing. The best part of Fr. Watrin was his simplicity and his bike-rides. Amazing to see the sacrifice these Americans have made to a poor country like Nepal - through their missionary vision but to maintain inter-faith peace. I later worked with Saint Mother Teressa's mission in Nepal who visited our school and was one of the greatest moment in our school history- that I till recall today.

I met Fr. Watrin in 1963 in Katmandu at the airport when, he so kindly met me on my flight from Saudi Arabia. I had brought him some items sent by his cousin in Dhahran. During my stay he was very helpful in helping me get more than 'a tourist view' of Nepal. He put me in touch with a WHO Nurse, who arranged my visit to a local hospital and he took me to the Jesuit schools where I met Fr. Moran. I in return invited Father and Nurse Smith (also from Dayton, Ohio) to dinner at my hotel.

I am currently converting all my slides of India, Nepal and Kashmir to a Power Point Presentaton for a travel show at my retirement community. This experience made me reflect on people I had incountered years ago (old people do that)and Fr. Watrin came to mind. I was so happy when I Googled "Jesuits in Nepal" I got so much information, especially about Fr. Watrin and Fr. Moran.

I was glad to hear that he had such a long and productive life. Nepal is better for his having served there.

Hello.

I had the pleasure of meeting Fr. Watrin during his last trip to Cincinnati, Ohio.

I am currently creating a series of paintings of Fr. Watrin's work and ministry in Nepal and I am looking for photo references upon which I can base my paintings.

It's so ironic that Fr. Watrin has had a big influence on me even though I have not actually talked to him. His presence was all that was necessary.

I still remember the time in the SET EXhibition 2004, where he was the chief guest.

I was among the designing team for the SET Magazine. And, when the SET Magazine 2004 was offically launced by him. I remember his words "wow!!!, this magazine is great".

These words are surely the best that i can get in for the review of the magazine. Especially so, becoz it was his words...

I was a student of Fr. Watrin at Saint Xavier's KTM. I would like to thank him for all his service to Nepal. Every time I start to write in English I remember him. He used to always say "write short, clear sentences". Once again, thanks.

I remember the days almost 25 years ago, when I was struck by a person who came from a far away land to teach under priviliged students from the third world country of Nepal. I teach English now, and am lauded for my command over English, even when it is not my mother tongue, nor is it my first language, and I have to thank Fr. Watrin for it. Many stories can be written about my days at St. Xavier's School and GAA in Nepal, and the influence Fr. Watrin had on me. His sense of humor and his strict adherence to perfectness has contributed in making me who I am today.

Thank you Fr. Watrin, you will forever be remembered.

I WAS STATIONED WITH THE AMERIRICAN EMBASSY IN KATHMANDU FROM MAY 0F 1986 THRU MAY 1988. THIS IS WHERE I FIRST MET FT. WATRIN. EVERY THANKSGIVING WE HAD HIM AND SOME OF THE OTHER JESUITS OVER AT OUR HOUSE FOR A BIG HOME COOKED TURKEY WITH ALL THE FIXINGS. THE LAST TIME I SAW HIM WAS ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO WHEN I TOOK A TRIP BACK TO NEPAL. AFTER CELEBRATING MASS AT THE ANAPURNA HOTEL, WE WENT TO A CHINESE RESTRAUNT FOR A GOOD DINNER AND GOOD CONVERSATION. LAST THING I REMEMBERED ABOUT FR. GENE WAS HIS GETTING ON HIS BIKE AND PEDDLING BACK TO HIS RESIDENCE IN THAMEL. HE WILL BE MISSED BY ALL.

We first met Father Watrin in Saudi Arabia when my husband worked for Aramco in the 1980's and 1990's. We also met with him in Kathmandu on a vacation at one time and have seen him since at various Aramco reunions. We have been on a correspondence schedule of several times a year for many years now. What a great, great man he was and many in this world will miss him as we will miss his letters and pictures. Our sincere condolences to his family and all his friends around the globe.

We met Father Waltrin only once, but we were awed by this perfectly remarkable man. There is no one else I know who has done what he has done for humankind.

Father Gene was a great friend to all the Jesuits in Katmandu. I lived with him for 25 years! He would often invite the Jesuits to the activities of the alumni association. There we could see the graduates of our school performing well in quiz contests, speech contests, dramatics, basketball games.

I was the scoutmaster of the St. Xavier scout troop. One day I asked Gene if he could suggest some social service projects that the scouts could do. He suggested that the boys help rebuild the small farmhouses of some poor widows. The widows do not have an adult who would repair a leaking thatch roof or a sagging wall of their home. In this way the boys were able to earn the scout bricklayer badge and at the same time help a family in great need. So we helped to rebuild the houses of six families.

Fr. Watrin was a classmate of my husbands (Chaminade HS. 1938). We were priviledged to correspond all these years and realize that he's influenced thousands of people making their lives better. We miss him, but know that he's in paradise.

The world has been a better place for the blessings and the joy Fr. Gene showered on all of those who came into his presence! May we all carry his Spirit and his joi de vivre....knowing as he always did...that God's love goes before us wherever we are. We are all better people for knowing Gene and having him in our lives.

My most sincere condolences to all of Gene's family. I first met him when I was working in the Middle East when he visited there (no names!) and have corresponded with him regularly over the many years ever since. He was a truly extraordinary person who lived an extraordinary life. May he rest now in God's peace.
