Dear family, Gene and I were in Basic Training together,6th Armored Division at Ft. Leonardwood, Mo. 1951. The Korean war was going on full blast and we were sure that's where we were going to be sent. But by luck we were sent to Germany because they thought the Russians were going to invade West Germany. I went to 4th Recon Co. 4th Inf. Div. & Gene got luckier and was sent to an MP outfit. In basic training Gene had a short fuse and was going to kill our D.I. when it was over. He and I and a couple other recruits used to come home on the weekend we hid in the trunk of a car til we got out of the gate we never got caught. Gene was a great story teller and a funny guy, I met him once at a car dealership on the north side. I became a Chicago cop for 38 years. I recall that Gene and a guy named Roger were close pals & were in the same MP outfit overseas. Maybe if we had been sent to Korea with the rest of our company we had a good chance of getting killed 58 years ago, a lot of our company did get killed over there. At least Gene and I got a break back then. He was a good guy and a great salesman. By the way when basic training was over "which was rough" Gene was the 1st guy to shake our drill instructor's hand, he realized that the DI was trying to make us soldiers and keep us alive in combat. God Bless him.
