Our favorite memory of Rick was when we were 12 swimming at New Trier for him....He would get down on the pool deck, lean over and stick only his head in the water....to SHOW us how to breathe properly. His passion for life and for his craft, unsurpassed. Rick had a profound impact on our personal development and lives. We Feel so Blessed.

I had the good fortune of meeting Rick shortly after he moved to Chicago and started coaching in the New Trier youth and high school programs. I coached the same kids with Rick for a term during my college years. Anyone who knew Rick knows that when he was in, he was 125% in, fully devoted to the topic, person, challenge, or responsibility in front of him. It was also clear early on that Rick was most passionate about helping young people fulfill their potential - as people first, swimmers second. His heart on his sleeve, he committed himself, as the years progressed, to this mission. Rick was special and had a unique ability to motivate, in a balanced way, kids to learn and reach for more in life. When our youngest child took a shot at competitive swimming before focusing exclusively on football, lacrosse, and basketball, I got a huge kick out of his having the opportunity to be coached by Rick, learning the mechanics of swimming from the master. Rick worked hard to stay on the leading edge of technique, cognizant of how important it was to a young swimmer developing her or his full potential.
Rick remained a kid at heart and his boy-ish enthusiasm for life generated a legion of supporters, who saw the positive impact Rick had on their kids. He gave a lot of himself and will be greatly missed and forever remembered by those who had the good fortune to know him.
To his family and good friends, please accept my sincere, heartfelt condolences and prayers. Though Rick left us far to early, his mark is real and enduring and his star will always shine brightly. To Rick, bring your positive approach and attitude to your new group of followers and continue your good work with them!
