Elliott Ebright had a generous heart and a discerning mind; and those lucky to enjoy his friendship knew the benefit of both. He had a pronounced investigative mind, always perusing some new trend in history, some arresting development on the cultural scene. An innately gracious person who embodied civility in understated terms, he was an avid listener who chose his words carefully. Yet when he did speak, it was clear he knew everything there is to know about so many intriguing subjects: of the highs and lows of American theatre and literature; of sports and sports cars, and the people who drove them and the people who perfected their motors; of the best way to travel through Europe and the best way to judge a design for a summer cottage-- and on and on and on. More than anyone I've known, Elliott knew what puts the spring into the most satisfying of life's passing moments. He also displayed a compassionate understanding of life's serious challenges. Many times over the years I was braced by his steadfast, solicitous friendship. I will always be grateful for his unfailing kindness to me and I will always be inspired by the tone of thoughtful exuberance which sparked his approach to life.
