Elizabeth Geraghty Obituary

Geraghty, Elizabeth Philomena

Elizabeth Philomena Geraghty (née Byrne) entered into eternal life on August 14, 2022, at her home in Chicago, Illinois, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Anthony Geraghty, and is survived by her five daughters, her fourteen grandchildren and first great grandchild, along with her children's partners, her beloved nieces and nephews, and friends too numerous to mention. Known as Phil or Phyllis to her extended family and as Elizabeth to many friends and work colleagues, she was the fifth of thirteen children born to Murtagh and Elizabeth Byrne in County Kildare, Ireland. She studied to become a nurse and then a certified midwife in England and Ireland, before immigrating to Chicago in 1966, where she continued her nursing career for more than forty years at Ravenswood and Illinois Masonic Hospitals. She cared for countless mothers and babies during and after their deliveries, and was the nurse everyone called for advice when a baby was born or a loved one was ill. She had a sharp mind and a subtle wit, along with a deep devotion to the Catholic Church and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her family was her pride and joy, and the beneficiary of her selfless service to others. She will be deeply missed and remembered every day. Visitation will be held on Friday from 3:00pm-8:00pm at Cooney Funeral Home located at 625 Busse Hwy. in Park Ridge. Funeral Saturday, prayers at 9:30am going to St. Juliana Church for Mass at 10:00am. Interment All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois (https://chicagobhgh.org/donate/), or the Catholic charity of your choice, are appreciated. I worked with Ger as I called her for 10 years. I learned so much from her. She always had a smile and a twinkle in her eyes. And her Irish brogue was a delight. Wish I would have kept in touch. Deepest condolences to the whole family and may she Rest In Peace.

Deepest sympathies to all of Phil's family.

Phil was a wonderful and gentle person and so proud of everything her daughters and grandchildren did. I will miss herself and Tony coming to visit as they used to, but find comfort knowing they're together.

May she in peace.

I was an obstetrician/gynecologist at Ravenswood Hospital from 1980 to1992. Fresh out of my residency, Mrs. Geraghty taught me everything I needed to know about the care of post-partum and post -op patients. Using remedies that were often simple and homey, she always knew exactly what to do to make the patient comfortable. She was wise and witty, always kind and upbeat. When I came to the post-partum floor and was greeted by Mrs. Geraghty and her twinkling eyes, I knew that everything would be alright.
Over the years, I often thought about Mrs. Geraghty and the invaluable lore of knowledge she shared with me. I am deeply saddened by her passing.
I extend my sincerest condolences to her large and loving family, May her memory be a blessing to all of you.

Sincerely,
Marcia Siegal, M.D.

My deepest sympathy to Elizabeth´s family. I worked with her at Ravenswood hospital. She was my greatest mentor and learned a lot from her. Thought about in the past few years. Wished we stayed in contact. She will surely be missed.
