Edwin Bishop Obituary

Bishop, Edwin

Edwin Bishop, Retired Deputy Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department died on October 13, 2021 at age 82. Born in Chicago, he was a lifelong resident of the Far Southside. Since 1961 he served the CPD in many assignments but his favorite ones were as a street cop. He was the third Black man from the CPD to earn a prestigious management credential from Northwestern University Traffic Institute in 1973. This experience inspired him to continue the pursuit of higher education. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors and DePaul University Law School in 1979. He earned his Captain's star in 1984. He served as the Executive Assistant and General Counsel to Police Chief Fred Rice. Later, as a Deputy Superintendent, he provided key leadership to implementation of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS). He is survived by his wife Saundra, children Susan (Marc), Kimberly (Liza), and David (Yvette), grandchildren, Liliana, Jackson and Sofia, sister, Judith Mitchell, brother, Hugh (Marian) Spann, sister-in-law, Virginia, (Myron). He leaves to mourn him many nephews and nieces, and also dear neighbors in the Morgan Park community where his family lived. He died from the complications of Parkinson's disease. He asked that family and friends celebrate his life with a party which will be held next year.
