Edward Smith Obituary

Smith, Edward Byron age 93, resident of Lake Forest, IL and Hobe Sound, FL, passed away June 27, 2002, in Chicago. Beloved husband of the late Louise Dewey Smith and father of the late Louise Smith Bross (Mr. John A. Bross), loving father of Suzette de Marigny Smith of New York and Edward Byron Smith Jr. (Maureen) of Lake Forest, beloved grandfather of Suzette Bross Bulley (Allan), Jonathan Bross (Sophie), Lisette J. Bross, Medora Smith Bross, Edward Byron Smith III, Peter Byron Smith and R. Gordon Faux III and loving great-grandfather of Parker Byron Bross, fond brother of Caroline Chappell (Mr. George S. Chappell Jr.) of Lake Forest and father-in-law of John A. Bross of Chicago. Also preceded in death by cherished sister, Mari S. Bromwell (Mr. M. Scott Bromwell) and dear brother, Solomon Byron Smith. Mr. Smith was Honorary Chairman of the Board of Northern Trust Corporation, Chicago, Honorary Director and retired Chairman of the Board of Northern Trust Corporation and The Northern Trust Company. He was the fourth generation of his family to serve as Chief Executive Officer of a major Chicago bank, as well as on the Chicago Clearing House Committee. Active in many civic and community organizations, including The Art Institute of Chicago, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Field Museum, the Chicago Zoological Society, the Newberry Library, Northwestern University and the Visiting Nurse Association of Chicago. Funeral services will be private. A Memorial service will be held July 9th, at 4 p.m., at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster, Lake Forest, IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Art Institute of Chicago or Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center of Chicago. Visit our Guest Book at suntimes.com
