Edward Knych Obituary

Knych, Jr., Edward T. 66, passed away on Friday, August 21 after a short battle with multiple myeloma. Ed and his wife, Lucia (nee Konecki), were born and raised on the south side of Chicago. The pair was unfamiliar with Duluth when they arrived in 1972 with their daughters expecting summer and woefully underdressed for the chilly May day. The temperature did not deter them, and they came to love the city of clear blue skies, ice cold water and an occasional black bear in the back yard. Ed was a charter faculty member of the UMD Medical School and a Pharmacology professor for 35 years. It didn't make him rich, but he said it was more valuable to have a job you liked going to each day. Several of his former students were his caregivers during the last months of his life. Ed loved the life he created with Lucia and enjoyed all the time he spent with his girls and grandchildren, making furniture in his garage shop, creating the ELK Central railroad line, going after "wallys" on opening day with Denny and the boys, watching a UMD hockey game and just having a beer after work. Ed was a good man, husband, father and grandfather and will be missed very much. Ed is preceded in death by his father, Edward Sr., and his mother, Marie. He is survived by his wife, Lucia, daughters Leisa (Mike), Lianne (Dave) and Kristin and grandchildren Hannah, Owen and Luca. A celebration of Ed's life will be held at the Minnesota Cremation Society in Duluth on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 3 to 6 p.m. Everyone who knew Ed is welcome. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Minnesota Medical Foundation, McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St. SE, Suite 300, Minneapolis, 55455

Not sure what to say?

September 9, 2009

Dear Lucia, I was so saddened to hear of Ed's passing. I remember Ed as far back as Nursing School when you first started dating him. We shared a lot of good times being Roomies. I pray for you and your family. It was too soon for Ed to leave all of us, but God does have his plans. Stay strong and tell your kids Howie and I pray you will all stay strong and smile often with your good memories.

Love, Pat(Wedding) and Howie Schnitz

Dear Lucia, Leisa, Lianne and Kristin,
So sorry to hear of your loss but I realize that his illness was the reason you left Duluth to be near your girls.
I won't be able to attend the service because I am signed up for a retreat that weekend, sorry.
Bill and I were talking about Ed and he shared fond memories of Ed including that he had given him his first set of golf clubs.
We really understand what you are going through because our Ed died January 25. You are in our thoughts and prayers
Love, Joanne Elliott and Bill

Ed was a great guy with a wonderful and a great laugh. It sounds as though Ed found a wonderful life with you and all your family. He was blessed as you were.
