Gron, Edward J. 73, retired Captain with the Chicago Fire Department, passed away on Saturday, New Years Eve, December 31, 2005 in Chicago. Born on April 17, 1932, to Rose (Golinski) and Edward James Gron Sr. Eddie entered the US Army in 1951 upon graduation from Senn High School in Chicago. He was honorably discharged in 1953, after serving his country during the Korean War - a very critical time in the US history. He then went on to attend the University of Montana in Missoula on a football scholarship, playing guard for the Grizzlies from 1953-57. Eddie joined the Chicago Fire Department in 1965 and served as a Firefighter on Squad 4 and Engine 83 - which at the time held the distinction of being the busiest fire house in Chicago for over a decade - later receiving a promotion in 1975 to Fire Lieutenant on Engine 110. The 15-year Fire Department veteran was quoted in the February 19, 1980, Chicago Tribune cover story "Byrne Halts Strike Talks" saying, "Somebody has got to stop the madness. I'm proud to be a fireman and I love the people of the city, but I'm embarrassed by the strike. I'm afraid the whole city will burn up". Eddie was also extremely proud of his service in the Public Education Unit, where he assisted with the development of the Survive Alive Safety House. After 33 years of service, Eddie retired from the Chicago Fire Department as Captain of Engine 9 at O'Hare in 1997. An avid sailor, skier, scuba diver, tennis player and big time golfer, Eddie belonged to the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club at Montrose Harbor, Lake Shore Ski Club and was a lifelong member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at Montana. Eddie is survived by his children, Valerie Lynn (Mike) Henley, Edward Harrison Gron Jr. and Victoria Ann Gron along with his grandchildren, Kyra and Kyle Henley and Scotty and Michael Gron. Beloved longtime partner of Emel Singer and loved brother-in-law of Louis Palombella, Eddie enriched the lives of many individuals across the country with his zest for life and will be missed by all. On Sunday, January 29, 2006, his many friends will be gathering at the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club at Montrose Harbor to toast Eddie's life and accomplishments. Per his wishes, Eddie's ashes will be scattered onto Lake Michigan in the summer. Donations to the Widows and Orphans Fund, payable to the Fireman's Annuity and Benefit Fund, 20 South Clark St., Chicago, IL 60603 is suggested and would be greatly appreciated. Dad, It's been 10 years..geez, you were right..it goes by faster each year. I still think of you everyday and always will. I'm really needing to talk to you these days..with pen and paper in hand; as I know you will randomly tell me some interesting family history or we will talk of the crazy world we exist in. All this hate, so many people out of patience and control. You would put great perspective on all this. I'm sure you met my classmate from Fox Lake last mon. to make sure he was ok. I will be going to say goodbye to him then. And I'm sure you met my best friend this past May who lost her fight with ALS, and my kitty too. I don't know how to get it out but I will keep writing to you here time to time and I will love you until the end of time. xoxo Vickerdoo

Dear Eddie up in Heaven,
You continue to be in our hearts and thoughts on this cold and snowy first day of 2014. Following the midnight fireworks display from Navy Pier last night, Denny and I released 8 balloons over Montrose Harbor in your memory.
It has been eight years since both my Sister Senel and you passed away in 2005, but 26 long years since we lost my husband Jim while my children were both teenagers. I am proud to say that Justin and Jodi have both grown up to be responsible young adults and they continue to provide me with many blessings.
I will spend the rest of this month in Steamboat Springs, CO enjoying my two adorable granddaughters Maizey (6) and Tula (4) who are both taking ski lessons on Mt. Werner where you first took me skiing . . .
Later this month, my niece Serfi, her husband Sinan and daughter Alara will come for our annual ski vacation. We continue to make lots of fun family memories that we will cherish for a lifetime and for that, dear Eddie, we Thank You!

Greetings to dear Eddie in Heaven from the sunny slopes of the Colorado Rockies where colorful wild flowers, fragrant lilac bushes and a variety of trees are all in magnificent bloom and the Yampa River is flowing high with melting snow from the mountain . . .
I just wish that my dearly departed Hubby Jim and you both could have been here last weekend to watch my two adorable granddaughters perform in their very first ballet recital. Maizey Skye (5-1/2) who just graduated from Kindergarten and her little sister Tula Rai (3) did a great job with their dance routines.
Thank You, dear Eddie for introducing me to Steamboat Springs in the mid-nineties when I was just learning how to ski and suggesting that I buy a second home here. My girls love coming to "Nene's house" at The Ranch for sleep-overs and swimming at the pool with the great view of Mt. Werner.
Because you introduced us to Colorado, my daughter Jodi ended up moving here and met her husband Rob. They got married in a beautiful mountain setting just outside of Steamboat and have blessed me with two precious granddaughters to love and adore. Life is good and I continue to count my many blessings!

Dear Eddie,
Did you see the balloons floating up to Heaven from Jackson Hole, WY on New Year's Eve?
Some of your Lake Shore Ski Club friends reminisced about the fun times they had shared with you on many ski trips in years gone by and helped me release a few helium-filled balloons. I hope you were able to catch some of them as they floated up to you. Your LSSC friends and I raised a glass in remembrance of the 4th anniversary of your passing at dinner that night.
I hope my dearly departed husband Jim (22 years) and you were both able to witness Jodi give birth to my 2nd granddaughter in Steamboat Springs on the day after Christmas. Without your having introduced the Singer girls to the splendor of the Colorado mountains, Jodi would never have met her husband Rob. So dear Eddie, see how deeply you continue to enrich our lives?
I hope you & Jim have hooked up in Heaven and continue to have fun together! I also hope both of you are continuing to watch over us . . .
Hugs,
Emel

Dear Eddie up in Heaven,
Were your ears burning yesterday?
Denny treated my Management Team at Banner to a fun afternoon of sailing on The Cat's Meow and Ronnie was his capable co-captain!
Of course, we saluted YOU as we passed the spot in the Lake where we had spread your ashes . . .
After we came back to Montrose Harbor, Donny and Margo came over in their inflatable and we sat on the Dock, reminiscing about all the good times we had shared with you.
Ronnie remembered the video you had recorded of the water fight at the Harbor a few years ago and we all had a good laugh!
All your buddies continue to talk about you and remember the fun times they each shared with you.
Rest in peace, dear Eddie . . .

Eddie,
You were a special friend for many years and I treasure so many memories of fun and laughter with you. I was always so happy to see you when I walked into the yacht club or the ski club because it always guaranteed great moments of hilarious stories and banter that only you could provide. But the time I turned to you when I really needed a friend to help me through a difficult time was your shining moment. You helped me turn tears into laughter that day at lunch, and then, as you recounted that story over the years to others, you brought tears of laughter to all who heard it too. Thank you for being my friend and for being there when I really needed you. I miss you very much and will think of you always.

Your family and friends across the entire country remembered you on New Year's Eve by releasing helium filled balloons into the sky at exactly 8:20PM Chicago time on December 31, 2006, while reminiscing about all the fun times we shared with you throughout the many stages of your life.
From your Univ. of Montana Sigma Chi brothers out West, to all of your Yacht Club & Ski Club friends in the Chicago area, plus your Florida buddies, you are missed by everyone who was privileged enough to know and love you.
Eddie, Thank You for touching so many of our lives during your lifetime. You truly enriched and impacted my life!

At the University of Montana in the fall of 1954, Eddie and I met as pledges at the Sigma Chi house. He came from a city of one million plus and I came from a Montana town of 30,000. At first we only had common interests in cars, his 1932 Ford and my 1931 Chevy. But soon we discovered that we both loved laughter, sports activity and the great outdoors of Montana.
Not long inn '54 & '55 it was very clear to the Sigma Chi's that Eddie was a diamond in the rough & just needed a little polish. Creative, intelligent, social and very helpful to others, he became a great active at the fraternity house.
Yes, we've known him a very long time and he will remain in our thoughts forever.

He went back to Chicago and I eventually went to Los Angeles and we lost touch. 10 years ago Eddie heard we had a gathering of Montana Sigs every year to play golf at Lake Tahoe. Before I write this letter to my dad; I'd like to say thank you all for your remembrance, love and friendship. It hugs the heart.
Dear Daddy,
I'm thankful to have you for my daddy
I'm thankful you've always been there through the good and bad.
All the memories of you and I run so deep; precious every one of them;in my heart I will forever keep.
You've taught me right from wrong; in this world;hardships came - I'd talk to you and they didn't last long.
You're someone in my life who's known me for 37 years- you ARE my hero. Teaching me strength and wisdom. Growing up seemed the hardest thing to do;knowing you were always there;is what helped me get through. I'm so thankful for you. You're handsome, awfully smart and funny. Remember when-you almost bought me that bunny? I have everything you have ever given me up on my dresser; this way I have a part of you and couldn't imagine loving you any lesser. I see a lot of you when I look in the mirror- and to me; being thankful you're my daddy couldn't be any clearer. I love you with Such a passion. Save me a spot someday on that big picnic blanket in the sky with Rufie.I Love You Daddy, xoxoxox Vickerdoo xoxoxox
