I thank God for the life which God gave to Ed here on earth and for the life which I am confident God has given him in heaven. Not only was he my biggest benefactor in helping the poor in Nigeria, but he was also the most welcoming when I came to see him every summer when I was home from Nigeria. He would set aside time from his busy schedule to have lunch with me or just to talk with me. Ed and Lois were my classmates at St. Catherine of Siena grammar school, and Ed was my classmate at Fenwick. They were both wonderfully kind people and I pray that the Lord will grant them eternal happiness in heaven and I pray that the Lord will continue to console all the family. I think Ed would be pleased that a Cooney Family History, to which he contributed stories about his mother and his other Cooney relations, was finally published this year, with a couple of pages about his side of the family. Any cousins who are interested should contact me at [email protected].

Dear Family,

I was very sad to learn that Ed has left us. We are cousins on his mother's side, but I only once had a conversation with him about our Cooney family connections. He very generously shared reminiscences about his early life and memories of the extended family, which I will include in the family history I am preparing. He was a wonderful person, and a hero to the clan.

Dear Lois and Family,
I am sorry that due to illness I was unable to attend Ed's funeral today at our beloved Old St Pat's. I met you briefly at the Emerald Ball-I'm Bud's daughter and Ed was kind enough to share a story or two about my parents when I saw him or wrote him. I am touched by his involvement with my church and my employer for the many years I worked, Rush Medical Center. He leaves a rich legacy. My deepest sympathies to you and your children on behalf of the "Mallin kids". God bless.

Lois, it is great saddness that we have learned of Ed's passing. He was a great man. When he sold papers for my mother at Austin & Madison, and when we met at Marquette Univ. he was always "The BEST". He will always be known as a "LEADER of MEN". We are very sad ....

December 29, 2007

Dear Lois and Family,

Please accept my sympathy.

Ed was a wonderful, kind and generous friend. Each year when I came to see him to ask for a donation to help the poor people in Nigeria, he not only gave me a generous donation, but he set aside time to sit down and talk with me, offering me something to drink and sometimes inviting me to have lunch with him. I really felt welcome.

Lord Jesus, I thank you for the wonderful life you gave to our brother Ed here on earth, and I thank you for the even more wonderful life which I am confident you have given him in heaven.

Lord, please console Lois and all Ed's family and friends. Deepen and purify our love for him, and help all of us to trust that Ed will show us even greater love and give us more help from heaven than he was able to give us while he was with us on earth.

Help us, Lord, to imitate Ed by giving us your own Spirit of love and compassion. We look forward to the time when we will all rejoice together in heaven.

With love and prayers,

Fr. Ed Riley, O.P.

There are times when the unwanted helplessness of vocabulary becomes painful. This is one of those times. The best I can do is to ask Lois to remember nothing less than the myriad of good times she has experienced with a man who has been a credit to himself, his family, and his fellow humans for so many years. He has left this "mortal coil" for a quieter place with a loving God. And he will be honored in heaven far more than he was on earth. Lois, I offer my deepest and sincerest sympathy for your loss. Eddy was one of those men who is truly irreplaceable.
Love - George
