Earl Elman Obituary

Elman, Earl S. Born March 21, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois; died peacefully November 4, 2002 in San Diego County, California. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Lucille; by three children and their spouses, Barbara Schiffman (Glenn) of Burbank, CA, Donald Elman (Linda) of Seattle, WA and Gerry J. Elman (Lois) of Swarthmore, PA; and by five grandchildren, Risa, Floren, Jason (Mindy), Adam and Joshua (Clover). After receiving his professional education in Illinois, Dr. Elman served during WWII as a dentist with the Army Air Corps in Texas. Following the war, he and his family returned to Chicago, where he started a long practice as an orthodonitst. He was an active member of local and national dental associations, and helped establish the extension of Social Security benefits to the dental profession. He was also one of the earliest anti-smoking campaigners. Upon retirement in 1977, Earl and Lucille moved to the San Diego area, where they participated extensively in lifelong learning programs and other cultural activities. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his love of travel and photography, his tenacity, and his determination always to do the right thing for his loved ones.
