In a Tilden Tech High School auto shop, the teacher broke the class up into small groups of four or five students; Colly and I were in the same group. Whenever the instructor wanted to get our group's attention, he would shout out across the shop "COLLYMORE". In many groups Earl was the leader or assumed to be the leader, because he would step up, speak out, take the lead.
Earl had many friends; he was always making new friends and never forgot old ones. At the First National Bank Building, Colly would call me from time to time to join him and his ComEd buddies for lunch. He called me (a non golfer) to join him and his weekly golfing crew to fill in for one of the absent foresomes, for the fun of it.
In the 70's a neighbor came to sell me tickets to Saint Albie's annual fund raiser, a cabaret. Instead, she convinced me to take a role in a play that Earl had a role in. It was 'SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE', by Langston Hughes. We did three shows a night, for the two day event, two years in a row. We laughed and ad libed so much, our director would remind us to include the lines from the script.
Earl would say that we were in the same Cub Scout Pack back in IDA B WELLS before his family moved away; but from high school on, through marriages, children and grand children we have stayed in touch, sharing tales of similar good and bad times.
You can tell anyone about your good fortune, but only a friend can laugh with you about your trouble and woes;
Aretas, Karyn, Kerri and Alexzandria, Earl was a great friend to share a laugh with.
