Dorthea Pennington Obituary

Pennington, Dorthea Drake 91 June 23, 1920 March 03, 2012 Dorthea Belle Drake was born in Rigby, Idaho, the daughter of Elmer Drake and Margaret Elliott Drake. The family moved to Portland in 1924. She graduated from Roosevelt High School. After earning her nursing degree at University of Portland, she married Merle Pennington, a medical student. She helped start his medical practice in Sherwood in 1947. Throughout her life she contributed to many medical projects and organizations. She raised three children in Tualatin and worked in community, political and church activities. She filled her life with books, travel, flowers, family and friends. She created a lovely, tranquil garden at her home. She planted redwood seedlings along Norwood Road and delighted in telling her grandchildren that she had jumped over these trees, which by then were 100 feet tall. Each fall for 50 years, she camped and bow hunted in Central Oregon with the same group of siblings and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Pennington, and by all her siblings and their spouses. She is survived by her three children, Gay Paschoal of Tualatin, Paul Pennington (Sue) of White Salmon, Wash., Jan Peterson (Gary) of Corvallis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

We will always treasure our memories of Dorthea and Merle and how they welcomed us to Portland and OHSU in 1984. Dorthea spread her caring and energy wherever she went. She was a role model for positive aging. She will be missed by so many whose lives she touched.

Dear Gay, Paul and Jan: Your mother was such a delightful woman. So full of life! I enjoyed her friendship during medical alliance meetings and county events. I send you my sympathies.
