Rev. Dr. Dorothy Strong was an inspiration for so many mathematics teachers and especially those African American teachers who attended NCSM, NCTM, and BBA yearly. As one of our she-roes, her legacy continues with all of us. The ultimate teacher and leaders! Thank you Dr. Strong.

To Dr. Joronda Crawford, Dr. Hiram Crawford and other family and friends of the Rev. Dr. Dorothy Strong: I am sorry for the loss of your mother. I am Charles and Geraldine Harper´s eldest daughter. They always spoke so highly of you, your Mom and your Dad. I just learned today that my Mom met your Mom in Memphis when they both attended LeMoyne-Owen College ! So truly they were lifelong friends. I hope that the wonderful memories of her and God´s love will comfort you at this difficult time. May she rest in heaven.

Dr. Dorothy S. Strong, my sixth grade Sunday School teacher, mentor, and godmother has entered life eternal. She was the wife of Joseph Strong, who I claimed as my godfather when my dad died; the mother of Dr. Joronda Strong-Crawford, who embraced me as sister when I assumed her father. Dorothy Strong led a an adult Bible Study for years at Commonwealth Community Church. I eavesdropped on those studies which my mother attended.
As I sat in my final session for the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Biblical Literature and the American Academy of Religion (SBLAAR) in San Antonio TX,I sent a text to Joronda which captures my appreciation of `our´ mother: "As I enjoy the privilege of being with scholars from around the world who study and teach religion and scripture, I am again grateful for the lessons your mom taught me regarding God's truth. I am awed by how important those teachings were then for the current moment. I can only believe this is another glimpse of God's faithfulness to prepare a generation for the time in which they will have influence."
Dr. Strong was head of Chicago Public Schools Mathematics (which is why I have a degree in Mathematics). But it was her embodiment of biblical faith that imprinted me most.
I am among many whose life has been transformed because of her ministry and witness to Jesus. As we mourn her absence among us in this life, we celebrate the gift of her life as she takes the journey into life eternal.

Beginning in the 1960's Dorothy and I became professional partners in many mathematics education organizations and projects. Her dedication, strong voice, and leadership influenced the work with students and teachers around the country. It was my good fortune to be with Dorothy and Joseph at conferences at least once a year over the decades. She indeed was devoted to God!
