Dorothy Smith Obituary

Smith, Dorothy Selma Was the youngest of four children born to Mattie Grier Hicks and Will Hicks May 16, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Wendell Phillips High School and Attended Cortez Peters School of Business, majoring in Business Management. Dorothy married Walter James Smith December 8, 1946. They were the proud parents of Walter C. Smith, their only child. Her siblings, Willa, Eloise and Morris preceded her in death. A lifelong Lutheran, she attended St. James Lutheran, Zion Lutheran where she formed the Zion Youth Scholarship Fund to encourage students to strive for higher education and maintain positive values. After God called home her husband of fifty-six years, she was welcomed into the family of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she enjoyed the fellowship visits from Diane Coleman and the spiritual comfort from Pastor Jennie English. Dorothy retired from the City of Chicago Department of Health in 1985 after twenty-nine years of public service. Survivors include her son, Walter C. (Karen); grandchildren, Tiffany Gholston (Lorenzo), Courtney Smith, Adam Smith; great-grandson, Ellis Gholston; nephews, Lester H. McKeever (Nancy) and Marvin McKeever (Mattye); a loving sister-in-law, Katherine Patterson and a host of great-nieces, nephews and friends. http://www.cagememorial.com/obituaries
