Dorothy Jones Bey Obituary

Jones Bey, Dr. Dorothy Lonelda "Jonesie" June 8, 1912 to February 7, 2003. Age 90, formerly of Chicago, Illinois died of a stroke on February 7, 2003 in Burlington, New Jersey and will be returned here to be buried with her husband Wilbert Singleton Bey. Born in Keystone, West Virginia, she moved to Chicago at age 16 and was a formidable force in education and child welfare here for over sixty years. One of the first Black Americans to receive a Bachelor's Degree, a Master's Degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, she was closely tied to Jane Addams Settlement House Programs, she retired as Director of Mary Crane Child Development Services, Chicago, Illinois after serving over twenty-five years. Jonesie also spent significant years at Firman House and Altgeld Gardens Nursey School in the Chicagoland area. Dr. Jones was very active and participated in the Women's League of Voters, the YWCA, Scholarships for Underprivileged Children and the Governor's Commission for Children at Risk. She was also a member of the Grey Panthers. Dr. Jones moved to Presidential Lakes, New Jersey in 1999 to be with her niece, Georgia. She is survived by her niece, Georgia S. Scales and her husband Kenneth of Presidential Lakes, one great-niece, Fara Slater of Willingboro, New Jersey, on great-nephew, Kenneth Scales II of Lawrenceville, Georgia, one great-great-nephew Kristopher Slater and one great-great-niece, Chara Slater both of Willingboro and one cousin David Coleman III of Berkeley, California. She will be missed by scores of friends, neighbors, students and associates. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 7, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mary Crane Nursey School, 2905 North Leavitt, Chicago, Illinois.
