Doris Jones Obituary

Services for Doris Ruth Sturkie Jones, 83, of Sumter will be held at 1pm Monday, July 3, 2006, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, conducted by Dr. Donald F. West and Dr. Larry T. Crowe. Burial will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pineview Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Jones, widow of Robert Franklin Jones, died Friday, June 30, 2006. Born in Pelion, SC, she was the daughter of the late Bertha Rish Sturkie and Daniel Reed Sturkie. A lifetime area resident, she had retired from South Carolina Industrial Commission. Mrs. Jones was a faithful member of Pineview Baptist Church, and was a former member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia, where she taught Sunday school for the 11-12year olds for years, she was also an active member in the Women’s Organization of the church. She enjoyed working in her garden, sewing and crocheting. Mrs. Jones was raised by her grandmother Mary Rish and her uncle Elijah Rish.

Surviving are her daughters, JoAnn J. Van Seters and (husband Garret) of Columbia, Cynthia J. Thigpen and (husband Edd) of Turbeville, and Dale J. Molina of Gettysburg, PA; half-sisters, Martha Sturkie of Columbia, Annie Ruth Moseley of Anderson, and Patricia Reeder of Cross Hill, SC; half-brother, Donald Sturkie of Georgia; four grandchildren, Yvette C. Van Seters, Samuel B. Molina, II, Consuela V. Hill, and Renee D. Molina.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by 2 half-sisters Mary Urban and Winnie Barnes.
