Donald Smith Obituary

Smith, Donald Robert age 73, of Long Grove, died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at his home. He was born August 6, 1931, in Gary, Indiana to Lillian (Sides) and Percy Henry Smith. On February 14, 1953 he married Mary Jane (Colkitt) Smith and had a daughter Linda (James) Zyrkowski, son Douglas (Debra) Smith, and son David (Cynthia) Smith. He also has four grandchildren Michell Smith, Kara Smith, David (DJ) Smith, and Kevin Zyrkowski. Don was a graduate of Emerson High School and completed the college equivalency of an Accounting Degree. Don spent almost his whole working career in reinsurance and at the pinnacle of his career he became President of Kemper Reinsurance Company in 1986. Upon his "retirement" from Kemper Reinsurance in 1993, Don enjoyed working for American Fuji Fire and Marine for the next ten years. Don was a life long sports fanatic enjoying rooting for his Cubs, Bears, and Bulls. Golf was another passion along with his Wednesday bowling league. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Philip Henry Smith and is further survived by sister Joan (Milford) Conquest. The visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., January 26, 2005 at Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 415 S. Buesching Rd., Lake Zurich, Illinois 60047, 847-540-8871. Services will begin a 10 a.m., January 27, 2005 at the funeral home followed by a luncheon at Concorde Banquets, 20922 N. Rand Rd., Lake Zurich, Illinois 60047. Interment will be a private ceremony at Windridge Memorial Park and Nature Sanctuary, 7010 S. Rawson Bridge Road, Cary, Illinois, 60013, 847-639-6502. Memorials would be appreciated for the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 S. Hager Ave., Barrington, IL 60010.
