Donald Moline Obituary

Moline, Donald

Donald Moline died at the age of 85 on March 11, 2025, in Iowa City, Iowa, following a brave struggle with cancer. Born on October 6, 1939, in Fort Worth, Texas, Donald graduated from Hartt College of Music at the University of Hartford. He earned a master's degree at Indiana University. He was a cellist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) from 1967 until 2006. As a member of Chicago Pro Musica, Donald won a 1985 Grammy Award for Best New Classical Artist for the ensemble's recording of Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale and Walton's Façade. Donald taught at the U.S. Peace Corps in Nigeria as well as at multiple universities. In his retirement, he was involved with the Puerto Vallarta Chamber Orchestra and the Instituto de Artes Musicales Puerto Vallarta in Mexico (IAMPV), where he performed, taught, and actively fundraised. He also volunteered as a minister of care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for Holy Name Cathedral, where he was an active parishioner for many years. Donald was a compassionate, humorous father, partner, and artist. He was loved and will be missed by many. He is survived by his partner Gretchen Van Heukelom, daughters Michelle, Erin and Misaki, and grandson Ethan. A memorial service will be held at Holy Name Cathedral on Friday, June 27th. Visitation starts at 9:30 followed by a service at 10:30, which will be live-streamed. Memorial contributions may be made to the CSO, Holy Name Cathedral, or IAMPV (https://iampv.org/donaciones).
