Family of Don Marquez:

I just found out about Don this week. I'm sorry for your loss. I met Don out here in Sturgis a few years ago when he came out to the Harley Convention....he was to meet his buddies who are police officers and he did bring his motorcylce with him. What made him so unique is that we were camping out in the Black Hills and brought out with him what we knick named"The Hilton" he brought his mobile home. We were all with tents and this class act guy comes with this mobile home.

I can't believe that this happened. He was out here going on two years now, I met him and his son Vince, he wanted to take Vince to the Crazy Horse Monument, and we did. I can't get over how much his son looked like him. Don would say this is the educated son. He was so happy that day....we went to Crazy Horse, we did a helicopter ride.....and we all had us a great time. My heart grieves for this great guy!!!! I will miss him this year....and we are planning on doing a memorial for him out here this August 5th-11th during the Harley Run. We will yell out to the Black Hills in the American Native call for the great spirit to hold him in his bossom. Don and Vince his son, did the Navajo yell with us when they were here..........yaaaaaaowhhhhhhh,yayooooooooooooooo..may the spirit of the great one hold you and your son always....my brother.

I will cherish our talks..and I will see you again.....I will pray for your son so that the spirit consoles him and carries out your will in life. Your man child.

Marquez Family:

My heart is sadden to hear of Don's death. I met him in Cancun, Mexico this past September with his beautiful wife. I have been out of the country these past 5 months and came to hear about your loss. We talked about several things since I am an attorney and he was just a great spirit to be around, he talked about our love for riding our Harley's and the Ocean. He and his wife were scuba diving and I guess she was all excited because it was the first time. Don spoke of his children, his daughter who was just begining her pregnancy,

his Son who was going to graduate from the University of Montana, or South Dakota and how proud he was of him he called him his mirror image,.. I just met this man and we were going to look each other up and I am sadden to hear of his passing, all that energy I met and loving man I saw......here's looking at you Don.......I brought him some cigars from Cuba.....I'll think of you when I have them...my friend.....I'll think of you when I'm riding in the Black Hills this summer........

What a spirit...........

Dear Patricia,

Just a note to again express my deepest sympathy for yourself and your family on the recent loss of your beloved brother in-law, Officer Donald Marquez.

I also want to let you know that I witnessed the profound testimony of your family on TV when I saw family members, family friends, church members and community residents gathered outside the family residence, singing hymns of faith and praise and listening to words of encouragement from their pastor. What a powerful witness to the Risen Savior, our Lord Jesus the Christ! I was deeply moved to see them lifting up the mighty name of Jesus the Christ the Son of the True and Living God so that men, women and children of the world might be drawn to him and that the sheep of His pasture might be comforted and confirmed in their faith that everything is in His hands and He is yet Wonderful, Counselor, Almighty God, even in the midst of great evil and tremendous pain. I was reminded that every hour of adversity, sorrow, calamity can serve to let the glory out! All the time, God is good! God is good all the time.

Again, my condolences to you and your family. Remain in Him and He will remain in you!

Very sincerely yours,

Nephew Richie Samanta

Dear Marquez family,

Over the past few months i've realised how important family means to me and how we have to stick together. I was deeply filled with sorrow when I heard the news of a fallen family memeber. I have deep concerns with death, and I believe its a subject we all should think of sometime in life. My words couldnt possibly help weaken the sorrow your family are feeling right now but I have to let you know that Our family is praying for you. I believe the strongest thing we can do together is give our prayers for you and so we are.

I want to let you know that my uncle Don is going to be deeply missed. I would also like to let you know how much Don ment to my brother and I seeing how the cops we meet dont have any patients with us. Don always took time out for me and gave me the attention people deserve. I'm grateful I have a uncle that cares with an open-mind. He will be deeply missed but NEVER forgotten.

He was indeed the life of the party at times, and i'm thankful I had someone that powerful in the family. I want to let you know that I truly believe that his soul is at rest with my grandmother in heaven talking about the good old times. His spririt watches over his house family and friends. I just want you all to know that even though he is gone physically he is present spriitually.

Peace to my family,

my prayers go out to

you all.

Your nephew/cousin,

Richard.

Dear Marquez Family,

We are very sad to learn the tragedy your family is passing thru. Your sister Patricia Tijerina is a good friend of us. thru her my husband learned several incidents that testify his sense of humor, love, and care.

Among the herd of several million people, such heroes are rare to find. for sure he will be remembered for his bravery and courage.

We extend our prayers to all your family. May God Almighty give courage to all of you to bear this accident and rest his soul in peace.

To my sister Maria C. (Conchis), and Mia, Carli, Nani, Don Jr.

You all know how much Don meant to us. I can't think of any words to say that can lessen your deep pain. But always remember that our family loves Don. He embodies every good and honorable attribute of a family leader. I speak in the present tense because Don's spirit is home now, only his body is left behind.

I just wanted to tell you how much it saddens me to know that we will never get to see Don at our Tijerina family gatherings. No one can ever take his place. We will miss him for so many reasons...for his kindness, his humor, his laughter, his music, his smile, his movies, his energy, his enthusiasm, his generosity, his concern, his helpfulness, his love of food. But most importantly, for the love he shared with each of our family members. He always made us feel special. Though he and I would sometimes argue or disagree about the most trivial of things, I cherished every second of it, because even in our disagreements, I enjoyed his company. He was a brother to me. And I knew that he loved me as a sister no matter what we disagreed about.

I am thankful to our Lord for having given our family the treasured moments we had with Don. Though they may now seem too few, they were precious times. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Always know that the best of Don is now with you and your children. When I look at you, I see Don. You are his legacy.

I await the time that we can enjoy his company once again in the presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

With all my love, your sister,

Patricia Tijerina

Dear Marquez Family and Friends

I was hoping everyone would share a few memories/pictures of Don's life and times that he shared with us. The first time I met Don he saved my life. It was in July of 1976. I was waiting for the bus on 35th and western and I was being attacked by a man and DON stopped his car and helped me. I had a few bumps and bruises and very scared. Don took me home. My mom was glad to see that a stanger cared enough to help. If I remember correctly Don was working in construction at the time but he had the instincts of a police officer. later we crossed paths again and he had this very nice baby blue and white cadillac. I thanked him again. I also remember that he had a van with a Zarape as a curtain. I saw Don working construction on a building Downtown close to Lasalle. I remember when he became a police officer he stopped by the neighborhood to say hello and that he would always be around if something was needed. Don said that he and his family had gone to california for a while and retured because he was accepted in the chicago police dept. I was very happy for him. I know that everyday of his life and career he helped or made a difference in someone's life in one way or another. His birthday is this month and I hope that it is celebrated with fond thaughts, memories and his music. I will always remember Don. My prayers are with you all....Elena

Please share your memories.

Dear Marquez Family,

As with everyone in the city, I offer my sincerest condolences.

I don't know the year exactly, but Donny and I were friends on May street (had to be sometime in 1958 to early 1960's). He was indeed a tough little guy then - probably as a result of roughing it up with his Brothers. I recollect wrestling with Donny on the front lawn on several occasions. We were just being boys-there never was any anger or animosity involved (needless to say). I am remiss in not having looked up Donny after we reached adulthood. I am proud to have known him in the early years and even prouder to know what a great man and father he had become.

Words cannot express the sadness in my heart for your loss.

My brother, Tim, is a police officer in Florida at this time. He and our entire family wish you peace and comfort in light of this tragedy.

With our deepest sympathies,

I have thought about signing the book but I thought to myself, gee they don't even know who I am, but here I go. I attended the wake and I was one of the 100's that attended the funeral and stood outside saluting as they laid Donny to rest. I can't get the image out of my mind. My heart goes out to the Marquez family. See I met Donny about 14 yrs ago. He came into the video store where I worked, he was one of many that talked me into taking the police test.11 yrs later, I am saying goodbye to the man, that always had a smile and yes, that always had a love for Motown. Don Jr, you brought tears to my eyes when you quoted Smokey Robinson! May God Bless each and everyone of you. You have an ANGEL now and he will always be on your shoulder!!!! I am a better person for having known Donny Marquez!!!

Lani,Carla, Donny + Family,

From the brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ of the Wheaton Free Church.

Our hearts broke this week at the news of your loss. We will all depply miss your father in this world, but we take comfort in knowing that he is now with God our Father and our Lord Jesus.

It was an honor to have gotten to know your father as we did. We will surely miss him. Words cannot even begin to tell of what a great man he was. He loved each and every one of you so much, it was so clear every time we met that he had nothing but pride and love for each of you. He never wanted anything but the best for all of you.

As part of the body of Christ we weep with you and your family during this time of trial. Please know that all of us are bringing you before the Lord continually! Praying that God would grant His peace, a peace that that Bible says "passes all understanding."

We love each and eveyone of you so much. We will always be here for you and your family!

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Mrs. Marquez & Family,

I have never forgotten your close knit and loving family from my years at Daley College. I will always remember when Mr. Marquez would pick up Carla, Alana and Don from school at the end of the day and how happy he was to see them and vice-versa. He always had time to chat and make me laugh. He was a very thoughtful person who on one occasion even ordered pizza for all the teachers to enjoy at a staff meeting.

Your husband and father was a hero not for how he died but rather for how he lived. I am honored to have known him.

My sadness for your loss is overwhelming. When the Marquez family moved into their home at 50th and May Street our block was complete. Mr and Mrs Marquez built a strong foundation for their young family. They were always good neighbors and the children had great role models. It was a given that they would be honorable and loved as adults. When I think of Donny all I see is 'smile' not normal people smile but the smile that comes through the eyes from the heart. I didn't know him as an adult but from all that has been written, I see that he kept his smile and touched many people. To the entire Marquez family, I am so sorry. Donny is loved by many and will be missed, but how fortunate to have memories that are full of love and happy times.

To The Family Of Don Marquez,

My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Marquez Family. When I heard of Donny's death on the news, I was heartbroken. How could such a wonderful man be taken from those who loved him,so early in his life. I wish I had the answer. I know the pain is great, many tears will flow, but everyday will be a little easier. God Bless all of you, and may the strength of your family help your pain.

I had the pleasure of meeting Don when I worked at the police department. He always came in with a smiling face and added laughter to my day. He was a good hearted manand will be missed by many. Your family is in my prayers.

Dear Family,

At many of our family functions, I always looked forward to seeing and hearing Don say "HELLO MIJA", followed by hugs and Kisses, not to mention his infectious smile. He reminded me of my dad so much, we will miss him.

The Lord has uncle Don right where He needs him. Now as for those of us left behind with broken hearts, be encouraged that Don's death was not in vain, but for all to know that through Christ we too can impact a troubled world by our example as he did. Don modeled honesty, commitment, loyality, respect, a fun-loving attitude to everyone, a true man of God. Although we lost a great man in this life, I know he is rejoicing in the next life with the Lord and my dad.

May the Lord's face shine upon you all and may He comfort you at this time, we love you.

Dear Marquez Family,

My mother called me yesterday to tell me of the shocking and tragic death of Donny. My father and Don's dad worked together for many years while I was raised at 5034 S. Morgan, near your family. As a young boy, I remember helping my dad and Dan Marquez with thier workload on Saturdays. Your family was always wonderful to us. Although hearing of Don's death brought a tear to my eye, I was suddenly caught with a smile on my face in remebering a happy day in my life as a 6 or 7 year old! Don (being 2 years older than me) took me out one Saturday afternoon to a lot in the neighborhood to help hone my baseball skills. That joyous, peaceful memory of Don has stayed with me all these years!! Hopefully, it is these type of memories that will also help every one of you to remember Don during the bright, happy times you shared with him. This will help the grieving and provide some peace in your lives. May God Bless You All.

To the Marquez Family:

On behalf of the Mission and Spiritual Care Department and Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, please accept our sympathy as you grieve the death of your husband/father/son/brother/loved one Don. Remember that he will remain with you always and that as you continue to share the stories of his life, the tears will flow less often and you will begin the process of healing. My wish and prayer is that you will find peace even during this time of loss and you will reaffirm your love for one another as a family.

My heart broke when I heard the officer's name. I saw his picture in the paper and knew it was the same Donny. He lookes so much like his Dad. In my mind, I saw Donny as a beautiful funny face baby with the wild hair that stuck straight up, who lived upstairs of me at 846 W. 50th. Then we all moved to 5200 S. Loomis, and he lived downstairs. What a beautiful family! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Although we haven't seen each other in over 30 years, you and your family are thought of often. Who would have thought way back then on May St., that you would have become a Chicaog Police Officer, one of the finest, toughest, and honorable jobs. I have always said that it takes a very special person to be an officer, and must have been you. My deepest sympathys are with your family now and always.
