My prayers go out to the entire Hogan family. I got to see Don after many years at our St. Barnabas 50 year reunion this last September and shared some wonderful memories of our days with the nuns. It was good to see him smile and be with some of his long time friends, like Dick & Fritz. He fought a good fight which is a good example of the strong man he was.

Don was the greatest. We grew together in the railway supply business when both of our fathers were at the helm. He quickly became one of the fraternity and was extremely well liked by all in the industry. May God rest his soul.

It's with deep sadness that I send my condolences to Carolyn, the children, Fred and the rest of the Hogan/Smith family.
From the days of playing little league baseball, grammer school football, high school football and track with Don I remember a determined and disiplined athlete and student. He always played fair, was a gentleman both on and off the field and was admired by all of us who had the opportunity to know and share part of our lives with him.
It was a delight to have seen him at the St. Barnabas reunion in September and I'm certain Don will be remembered with honor at the St. Ignatius 50th class reunion.
I'll bet that the track in heaven is smoother and faster than Rockne Stadium, the football field is level and freshly mowed and that Don is running them with greater happiness than in his healthy days as a teenager at Ignatius and Notre Dame.
God Bless the Hogan family and be assured that you are not alone in your sadness over the loss of Don.

During the time I spent with Don at Notre Dame, I saw a man that was more determined to succeed than any other on the campus. His hyper-competitive nature rubbed off on his coaches and teammates who found his work ethic an inspiration. Those who ever competed with him in ANY activity from cards to sports got to see him at his "hate-to-lose-at-anything" best that was his hallmark. My prayers go out to Jane, Carolyn and the rest of the family. He was a one-of-a-kind guy and he will be missed.

I have been fortunate in my life to have had many great teachers. My Mother and Father were my first, and of the many lessons I learned from them "love one another" was foremost. I met Don when I was 10 yrs old and he somehow allowed me to play for the Multi-Varsity, because my older brother was on the team. Don led by example. We knew he never once asked us to do something he hadn't done 1000 times. He also taught us that anything worth doing, was worth doing right. His disdain for mediocrity was not a slight against the weak. He always knew who and what he could get out of his players. What broke his heart was not doing your best. He was the first to hug you if you got beat after giving your best. As players, we could tell how much his heart and soul were behind us. I wanted to do well for Don and myself. He made our team a family. I now realize Don was only in his 30's when he coached us. No wonder he was so impressive. Don helped me early in life to always do my best, but to also have fun. I can see his smile now. Thanks Don for teaching me to be my best, to be a gentleman, to be a leader, and to love family and friends. To your wife and children they know he will always be "COACH"

It was with sadness that I heard of the passing of Coach Hogan. Don was an inspiration to me and had much to do with starting me, like many others, off on the right foot in life. My parents adored him. He was, and always will be, the gold standard of what it means to be a man: passionate, caring, devoted and giving. My sympathies to the whole Hogan clan, and all who knew him, for losing such a great guy.

When "Big Jim" passed away, I remember how much Don went out of his way for me to make sure I felt a part of everything, that was how he was with everyone. He took care of family and friends. I will never forget how he made me feel during those horrible days, from picking me up at Midway, to making sure I knew pictures of my brother and I were in the collage that was done for the wake. Don, you will be missed forever, but you will remain in our hearts until we join you & "Big Jim" at the red dog table I'm sure you guys have set up already.
