Devereux Bowly Obituary

Bowly, Jr., Devereux Lifelong Hyde Park resident Devereux Bowly, Jr. was a man of many professions, passions and talents. For most of his professional life, he was an attorney with the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, providing help to people living in poverty. Mr. Bowly was also a respected historian, author, preservationist, community leader, and owner of two historic Michigan resort hotels. Bowly, 71, passed away on Wednesday, August 6th in Michigan City, Indiana due to complications from injuries sustained in a fall. A prolific writer on Chicago history and architecture, his works include "The Poorhouse", a pioneering 1978 book on the history of subsidized housing in the city, and reissued in an updated and expanded version in 2012. A biography of philanthropist Julius Rosenwald was in preparation at the time of his death. Community activities include being one of the founders of the Hyde Park Historical Society and overseeing the conversion of a historic cable car station on Lake Park Avenue as its headquarters. He was also one of the founders of the 57th Street Bookstore, and part of the original docent group organized in 1971 to lead architectural tours for the Chicago Architecture Foundation. A second professional career was as owner of the Gordon Beach Inn and the Lakeside Inn, historic hotels in Union Pier and Lakeside, Michigan. Both were carefully restored and furnished to reflect their early twentieth century charm, and have become popular destinations for vacationers and the Chicago art community. A sister, Judy Zitske of Madison, Wisconsin, survives him. Private interment at the First Unitarian Church of Chicago in Hyde Park. Memorial services in Hyde Park and Lakeside will be announced in the future.

Attorney Bowly was the supervising attorney that trained me as a paralegal in landlord-tenant disputes. I worked with another Paralegal and we both would represent tenants in court, it was fascinating and the greatest experience ever. Attorney Bowly was patient and king I can still see him sitting in his office. Lynette Oden.

Just found out this sad news..While at Providence St Mel high School I got my first job in 1975 as a CETA intern. Dev was my supervisor and kept me busy at the xerox machine and law library. He was a great role model always showing keen intellect and a great sense of humor. I was glad to have read his book, The Poorhouse, which fueled my passion for housing issues.

So sorry to learn of Dev's passing. As a young law student, I worked with Dev at LAF in the mid 1970s. He was mentor to many who passed through the old 911 S. Kedzie office and one of my first major influences in the law....a very good man who did very good things for the poor and disadvantaged.

I worked with Dev for a few years the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago's Westside office, located in the old Sears administration building at 3333 W. Arthington. I later lived in the same complex as him in Hyde Park. As a new attorney & sometimes aesthete, I was wowed by Dev, who was incredibly dedicated to his clients and knowledgeable about the law, but also engaged with the arts (especially architecture). He often offered me rides home to Hyde Park, and we had many memorable conversations ranging over countless topics. He was always generous, and even gave me an original copy of The Poorhouse, which still graces my bookshelf. He will definitely be missed. My condolences go to his sister and her family.

I met Dev working at Lakeside and Gordon Beach Inn. He always took time to stop and say hello to the staff at Timothy's and we all enjoyed his conversation. I will miss running into him from time to time and waiting on him as well. See ya later Dev

Dev always volunteered to work at the Lakeside Association Ice Cream Social. He wanted to show his support for our little town. We always appreciated his dedication to the Lakeside Community. Thanks, Dev.

I knew Dev through the HP Historical Society. He was a quiet man, always attentive, always dignified. When there was a book reading at the 57th St. Bookstore, he was an animated and welcoming host. His many contributions to Chicago will not be forgotten.

My deepest sympathy to Devs sister and his friends. He was a wonderful person with great vision for preserving the past for generations in the future. The fifteen years that I worked for him at the inns I got to know him and respected him dearly. A diet coke and conversation on Sundays together leave great memories of him for me. I know he will always be at the Lakeside , I wonder which room he will occupy? My deepest regrets to those that mourn him.

I worked at the West Side office with him from 1982 to 1988 and stayed in touch afterwards. He was one of the attorneys on Trimble v. Gordon, a case that went to the U.S. Supreme Court and established the right of illegitimate children to inherit from their fathers. He was the only person at LAF who understood how the sales of unpaid property taxes forced people out of their homes and what could be done to prevent it. He was a gentle man who was always the voice in case acceptance meeting arguing why we should be doing something for a client, even if it wasn't the kind of problem we usually dealt with.

The office where we worked at 911 S. Kedzie was a cement block structure with two glass block windows and rows of interior offices (and lots of mice). Like the rest of us, even though he was a supervisor, Dev's office had no window. But there was an opening to allow some natural light to come in from the front of the building and he had furnished his small office with a carpet, real lamps, and art work so that it was a peaceful oasis in our stressful lives.

I remember how excited he was about the buying his very first property in Lakeside and his pleasure in helping save so many historic properties both in Chicago and in Michigan. We are all so much better off because we had Dev in our lives and our communities.
