David Turow Obituary

Dr. David D. Turow, 80, of Winnetka, Illinois, died on Saturday, December 26, 1998, at Evanston Hospital after a lengthy illness. He practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology for over 50 years in Chicago and the northern suburbs, during which time he delivered more than 7,400 newborns. He was also a decorated hero of World War II.

Dr. Turow graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago in 1942 and trained at Cook County Hospital. He was a clinical professor at Chicago Medical College and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served as the chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Edgewater Hospital, Chicago, and later as chairman of the Department of Gynecology at Rush North Shore Hospital, Skokie. He was a member of the Board of the Chicago Medical Society for many years, and authored numerous articles in medical publications.

During World War II, Dr. Turow served as a Major in the Army Medical Corps, attached to the 101st Airborne Division, and was with the American Forces when they liberated Dachau, the Nazi concentration camp outside Munich, Germany. He received the Bronze Star for valor on three occasions, including one for volunteering to parachute into Bastogne, Belgium, to provide medical relief to American troops under siege.

Dr. Turow is survived by his wife, Rita (a former teacher and currently a free-lance writer); a son, Scott (an attorney in Chicago and author of five best selling books), a daughter, Vicki (a clinical psychologist in Cleveland, Ohio); and four grandchildren.
