How I miss those Libertarian book club days, the fire, the passion, the clashes,,,,,, and that gentle brilliant man that always made sense.

Of the many legacies this force of nature leaves behind, to me the most significant is the blueprint he left on how to live life. On a daily basis, he wrang dry the abundant intelligence and talents God gave him. Imagine what this country could be if we followed his lead.

Dave was a kind, generous, and thoughtful man. I remember his monthly Loop Libertarian League meetings fondly. Those meetings touched many people, and I know were responsible for helping many of us better understand personal freedom and liberty.
I will miss Dave's gracious and intelligent manner. My prayers are with Dave and his family.

He was a great man who was incredibly generous and helpful to me and an amazing beacon for liberty. A wonderful teacher – he used the Socratic dialog method better than just about anyone. The Chicago and indeed the worldwide libertarian movement was more influenced and enlarged by him than very, very few others.
I knew Dave for about 30 years and had the pleasure and privilege to have worked closely with him on an LP campaign, the LLL (Loop Libertarian League), his Mises Human Action seminar and then at Heartland Institute for over ten years total. He will be missed immensely by me and I'll wager many others.

Dear Padden Children --
I was your Dad's "next door neighbor" when he was still a Northsider. Dave moved into the same apartment building on Loyola Ave when we were both in the 5th or 6th grade at St. Ignatius Grammar School. In 1941 we both entered Loyola Academy just a few months before Pearl Harbor was attacked. In those days Loyola Academy and Loyola University designed a program where some Loyola Academy boys were offered the opportunity to accelerate their high school education to a 3 yuear program, and be able to get a year in at Loyola University, before they were drafted. Dave accelerated, but I opted for the regular four years. After Japan surrendered, we reunited at Loyola University. But by this time Dave was no longer a Northsider but had become a regular visitor (or settler) down on the far Southside -- the result of his meeting the delightful and lovely Joan Gallagher up at Lake Delivan in Wisconsin. I recall attending St. Patrick Day's parties at Joan and Dave's home in Beverly and I may have met some of you when I was in your home; but most of our meetings were chance meetings in airports.
Dave, while a Northsider, was a great and true friend. Please know that both Dave and Joan are in my prayers, as are all of you.

Dave Padden was a hero to all the Dillon's! He was one of Dad's closest friends forever! He was so kind to each of us, always incredibly interested in what we were doing in our lives. His rich sense of curiosity was genuine and infectious. He was the smartest guy in the room, but never came across that way. It was an honor to have known him! Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Padden and the family. Mark Dillon
