David Brecht Obituary

Brecht, O.S.A., Rev. David L. 75, died September 6, 2014. Native of Detroit. Loving son of the late Lloyd J. and Mary Brecht. Professed vows in the Augustinian Order in 1957. Ordained priest in 1965. Provincial of Midwest Augustinian Province for three terms. Principal, St. Rita of Cascia H.S., Chicago (1979-83). Headmaster at Cascia Hall, Tulsa. Founding Headmaster at Austin Catholic Academy, Ray, Mich. Teacher and administrator at Tolentine College, Olympia Fields, and Villanova U., Villanova, PA. Taught at Mendel Catholic H.S., Chicago. Served at St. Jude Church, New Lenox (1999-2001). Named Outstanding Educator of America (1972). Inducted into Four Chaplains Legion of Honor (1980). Survived by his brother Augustinian friars and siblings, Ann Brecht Stock (Tom) of Hinsdale, IL, John Brecht (Geraldine) of KY, Paul Brecht (JoAnne) of MI, Tom Brecht (Mary Ann) of MI, Mark Brecht (Mary) of MI, Greg Brecht (Michelle) of MI; and many nieces and nephews. Buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit. Memorial Mass 10:00 a.m. Saturday, St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, 7740 S. Western Ave., Chicago. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Augustinians, 5401 S. Father Mangold's philosophy class. I got a 96 and David got a 56. Mangold asked what I thought of the test. I told him it must be invalid, because all I knew I learned from David.
