Rest in peace, brother. You laid your life years before I joined and I am eternally grateful for what you did. As a soldier currently enlisted in the Army and also from the Southside of Chicago, I can’t help but draw comparisons of your life to mine. I’ve driven by the Szykowny Funeral Home countless times growing up, unknowing of the sacrifice you made years before. I’m proud to have shared the same city and organization with you. But, no matter what I do, I will never be half the soldier nor half the man you were. Today, my thoughts are with you, the Zizumbo Family, and any friends and service members who knew you. Thank you for your service, Daniel. And may God watch over your soul.

PFC Zizumbo:
I didn't know you but I was the 1SG of 1st CTC when you died. I had arrived to the company 6 months earlier and only knew of you through the contact with your deployed Platoon Sgt when i spoke with him to get a status report. I arranged the military funeral for you and held the last gut wrenching roll call when you did not answer. I comforted the Soldiers who did know you and we got through a tough time together. Know that you are still in my heart to this day because regardless of not knowing you well you were still my Soldier. Rest in peace Trooper.

Never Forget. I didn't know PFC ZIZUMBO but I saw him that day. I was waving bye to Sgt. Yoon at the front gate as I drove Truck 2 out of the check point. The road was blocked by a semitruck, they knew we were coming and it was well planned. I was there that day, I saw it happen, called in QRF and went back to pull security. I remember waving at the soldiers as we drove out, they were pushing back the crowd. I never forget, I think about that day all the time, it's been over 6yrs and I don't forget. God Bless

To the family of "Z",
I just found this guestbook 10 mins ago searching the internet with him being on my mind. I knew "Z" for a brief time when i was stationed there. whenever i had to go out that front gate i would see him with a lollipop and a huge smile no matter how bad the day was going. We would talk for a few minutes and then start playing with the kids who would try to sell things to us for random prices. he always had funny things to say and just crack me up. two weeks before the incident happened i met up with Z passing threw the PX tryin to get something to eat. thats where i remember him tellin me he was from chicago and then we just went on and on becasue i am originally from Milwaukee area. then later that week i got relocated to Baghdad. it was there that i found out from a phone call from a buddy that was still in Afgan. enough said. He was a GREAT man. a true blessing to have known. I have had him on my wrist with a hero's bracelet for over 3 years now and i have never taken it off. Your family and Z are on my mind everyday and i hope to one day visit his resting site if i can find out where it is. I wish your family the best of wishes for the future. "Z" even though i didnt know you like all your other unit members, i never forgot the times i had the pleasure to have met you out there and you are on my mind everyday. you will never be forgotten I promise that. Rest in peace Z and god bless your family

I had the express pleasure of knowing "Z". He served in Bagram with my Husband SGT Giebas, and there were many picnics and BBQs where he would just be sitting there playing cards always with a smile on his face. He was such a happy guy, and would do whatever he could to help a friend in need. He is and always will be loved by SGT Giebas and myself, Debra Giebas. You will be surely missed, and never ever forgotten. your picture hangs so that we will always have you close to us. may your family continue to find the solace that has helped them cope with what they have endured since that most painful day. you are always in our hearts and thoughts. I can't believe its almost been 2 yrs and yet it feels like it was just yesterday that we received news of danny's passing. I don't remember danny much but he has my respect for what he did for our country. To his family just want to say I know how everyday goes by for you because I lost my brother-in-law 10 days before you lost danny and its incredible that time goes by so quick and we miss them so much and sometimes it just feels like they're going to walk through that door any minute and then you realize it that they're gone forever but always remembered. GOD BLESS YOU...

Dear Family of Pfc. Daniel Zizumbo,
We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.
Very Sincerely
Frank G. Noyes

I am very saddened to hear of the loss. I am sure Daniel was a great person. I wish I would have known earlier that I had a relative in the military, serving. Both my father and I were Marines in War time, and would have loved to support Daniel's tour. Nonetheless, I am very proud of the legacy Daniel left behing for the entire Zizumbo family and the rest of the US. It truly takes a great man of integrity and strength to to serve as he did. I am very honored and proud to be related to this American hero. Love, Manuel Zizumbo

Danny, well I dont know what to say man. Only a Military man understands what it feels to lose someone. Only family knows how it feels to lose a son, brother... I'm sure you already know that your family misses you dearly. Your sister is so proud of what you stood for. Its sad that this is our destiny.. But I guess God wanted you to be a guardian angel for your family.. I was fortunate to have met you cousin Paul... I met him here in the RS.. and bumped into each other in Japan. Hung out there in Oki... Fun memories. Just know you will be missed deeply.. GOD BLESS YOU AND TAKE CARE OF YOU AND PAUL AS YOU WATCH OVER YOUR FAMILY..
To the Zizumbo family,
Senor, Senora, Licci, Mona, Guero... My heart goes out to you... I CAN'T Imagine how it feels to be in your situation. I know it hard and sometimes unbearable. It feels like a bad dream that we all wait until we wake up. just know I am heart broken to have found out what happened. My Prayers go out to you and my fallen Brother in Arms...

SPC Zizumbo,
What can you say about someone that has touched your life in so many ways. I knew "Z", I worked with him many times outside that gate. He always made you smile, didn't matter what kind of mood you were in. We had that kind of relationship only a military member can understand, only spending time when duty called, but having a strong bond that could not be broken. I only knew him a few months but that was long enough to change my outlook on life. I wear a bracelet with his name on it everyday to remember how fragile life can be and how one person can change your life so much.
To his family you have my deepest sympathys. Words can never begin to express what I know you are going through. But I want you to know that Daniel has changed my life forever. I know the kind of person he was is because of the great people he had around him while growing up. May Godbless you always. Please let me know if you need anything at all.
To anyone that reads this I have one thing to say to you, it is the way I live my life now, because of SPC Daniel Zizumbo and that is
"Live Free Never Forget"
Godbless you Zizumbo family and friends
"Z" I will see you when the good Lord calls for me I know you will be at the gates watching over all those inside.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

God gave us the gift of life with His precious Son. To this gift we owe our very existence.
We are blessed to have loved ones that are willing to follow His example of sacrifice and serve so that others may live and be free.
Our Freedom comes with great cost, but when the greatest price is paid the reward is Heaven.
My sister-in-law, Geraldine "Marque" Marquez, was checking trucks with Daniel at the gate. She was also killed by the blast.
Please enjoy the Freedom our two loved ones (and so many others)have provided us with.
God be with the Zizumbo family and those touched by his life.

To Dan's family: I knew and worked with "Z" at Bagram and was nearby when he died. We had talked just the day before.
The job Z performed at Bagram was, day to day, one of the most dangerous. He did it very, very well. Everyone knew the front gate was the most likely place to get hit. Bagram is a large target and a suicide bombing attack is difficult to defend against. He knew death might try to come through the front gate and his job was to prevent it from getting any farther. He did just that.
Dan died along with 22 others that day, two of them young Afghan children. It would have broken his heart to know that. All the kids hanging out at the gate knew Dan as a friend and as some one they looked up to. The children of Bagram are the poorer for his passing. Hundreds if not thousands of Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen came out to stand at attention, salute and say good bye to Dan that dark, cold morning.
Members of Dan's unit are working to send you a panel from the guard shack Dan decorated with his distinctive "tagger" style. Pvts. Huff and Lerma are still there, still doing the job. You may wish to contact them.
May God protect you and heal your pain.

I know the pain parents feel when they loose a child. I lost a son 19 years ago. It is a pain that defies description. It is a pain that never goes away. It is a pain that will never end. It is a pain that is all consuming. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
May God Bless and keep you today, tomorrow and forever!
Rest in Peace Brave Warrior; you did your duty with great honor and dedication.

Growing up, Daniel was a quiet and bright kid who loved sitting on the porch steps of his mother's house. And when you passed him by he would smile at you with a hint of shyness.

Danny was an old childhood friend of mine who lived 2 doors down from where I grew up. We shared many good memories of us playing, joking, and hanging out as kids with the other guys on the block. I would like to also say we remained friends as we went different ways and didn't see each other much. I wish I had more time to catch up and get to know who he was before he left God's earth. He was a 'good guy' and my heart goes out to his family. Semper Fi!

The pain of losing a loved one is always unbearable. It is intensified even more when that loved one is your son. There are no words that could ever calm the pain in your heart but feel the love that is coming from your friends and family members and embrace it in this extremely hard moment of your life. God has called Daniel to his side and one day you will be reunited with him. Although I didn't know Daniel the way his mom spoke about him it was obvious what a special person he was. My deepest and most heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Father we entrust our brother Daniel to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Daniel in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.
