Daniel Palumbo Obituary

Palumbo, Daniel 29, born August 5, 1987, died peacefully and without pain in the early hours of April 2, 2017, surrounded by his family and wife. A devoted native of Chicago, Dan attained his B.A. at DePaul University, where he majored in Philosophy and minored in English and French. Dan went on to enter a Ph.D. program in Philosophy at Penn State, beginning a dissertation exploring pain, suffering, and disability through readings of 20th century French philosophy. Dan's work focused on the necessityand impossibilityof first-person accounts of pain, and was deeply informed by his own experience with recurrent bone cancer and disability. Dan was a uniquely loyal friend to those near and far, with an empathy for others that greatly exceeded any attention to his own difficulties. His charming personality, disciplined work ethic, and love of new experiences led him around the worldthrough Turkey, Germany, Italy, and his beloved Franceand made him a crucial asset to Penn State's philosophical community. Dan also adored his hometown; when he visited Chicago, his family knew they'd soon be wandering through the Art Institute, enjoying meals over the red-checkered tablecloths of Gio's Cafe and Deli, and talking and drinking late into the night at the basement bar of his parents' home. A talented drummer and guitarist, Dan shared his passion for music with family and close friends, swapping records and frequently attending shows; he also had a consuming love of literature, reading poetry and novels nearly as often as works of philosophy. While he laughingly admitted to a "slightly obsessive" absorption in his intellectual life, Dan was also humble, playful, and funny, with an unpretentious and welcoming presence. Dan is survived by a loving and much-cherished family. His brother, Paul, was both confidant and partner-in-partying; they had earnest discussions, supporting and advising one another through the hard times, but also loved traveling to festivals, savoring beer, and playing improvised music at all hours. Dan's mother, Donna, never swayed from an unstoppable cheeriness that curbed his tendency to lose himself in over-serious thought; from childhood on, he never stopped craving her potato salad. His father, Jeff, shared the musical talents and old touring stories that led both sons to pick up instruments of their own and hone their skills with their father during jam sessions in the garage. Dan's wife, Joyce Eveleth, was the love of his life; they read poetry together, hiked their way to beautiful views, raved about breathtaking concerts, discussed philosophy, both academic and lived, and always, always laughed. In lieu of flowers, Dan asked that contributions be made to the Daniel Palumbo Memorial Disability Studies Lecture; information can be found online at www.gofundme.com/danpalumbo. A service will be held Friday, June 16th at 10:45 a.m., visitors may meet for the internment at the office of Resurrection Cemetery, 7201 Archer Ave., Justice, Illinois. A celebration of life will follow at 12:00 p.m., at the European Chalet's Mayor's Mansion, 5445 S. Harlem Ave., Chicago, Illinois.

Donna, Jeff, & Paul:

This legacy memorial was one of the best I've ever read.
Dan had more life in his years, than many with twice or more the number of years to their lives.
I hope those thoughts bring comfort you.

Love, Mike Olson

I never net this young man. His father was my best friend growing up. Daniel looked a lot like his Dad when we were young. I am so sorry for your loss. May he rest in piece in Gods hands.
