Dana Fryer Obituary


BURLINGTON, N.C. - Dana Tune Fryer, 67, of Trail Two, Burlington, died in the presence of family on October 17, 2004, at Duke University Hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Fryer was born on September 5, 1937, in Danville, Va., the daughter of the late Col. and Mrs. William Orrin Tune.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, William Sawyer Fryer; son Michael and his wife, Beth, of Cox's Creek, Ky.; daughter Lauren Page and her husband, Roger, of Elon; four grandchildren, Will and Ben Page and Rachel and Dana Fryer; brother James Fulcher Tune and his wife, Katherine, of Seattle, Wash; and numerous Fryer family members and nephews and nieces. Mrs. Fryer has many lifelong friends, who, along with her family, will sorely miss her and honor her indomitable spirit.

Mrs. Fryer was predeceased by her brother, William O. Tune Jr., of Roanoke, Va.

Mrs. Fryer devoted her life to her family and to education, teaching for 42 years in schools in Florida, New York and North Carolina. She influenced generations of students, concentrating in special education and on youngsters with behavioral problems. Mrs. Fryer received awards as Teacher of the Year at Graham High School in 1991 and for Excellence in Teaching in 1993 from the Alamance County Chamber of Commerce.

Mrs. Fryer attended public schools in Chatham, Va., Westhampton College of the University of Richmond and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from which she graduated Phi Beta Kappa at the age of 20. She received her certification for working with emotionally handicapped students from Greensboro College. She was a member of the education honorary, Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Alpha Chapter.

Mrs. Fryer was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church.

Services will be held at Saint Mark's Reformed Church in Burlington on Tuesday, October 19, 2004, at 4:00 p.m. The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Graveside services and interment will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham, Va., on Wednesday, October 20, at 1:00 p.m. by the Rev. Suzanne Shoffner officiating.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Scott Funeral Home, Main Street, Chatham, Va.

I went all the way through school starting with kindergarten with Mary Dana, as she was called then. And her mother was my marvelous Latin teacher. Dana was always friendly, upbeat, and loyal to her friends. Though I haven't seen her since about 1954 at Westhampton College, I am distressed at her passing and regret that we have not been in touch through the years.
