Here is a little known story of Mt. Carmel football and Chester: I was the Athletic Director for Mt. Carmel for two years, 1969 to 1971 or there-abouts. There was a football game scheduled between Mt. Carmel and Oshkosh, Wisconsin, at the time. Tom Noble and myself went to Oshkosh to find a place to stay for the football team after the game. I do not remember the motel we went to, but the owner said he wanted nothing to do with the team. Tom and myself tried to convince him that there would be no problems with the boys. He finally agreed to allow the team to stay at the motel after we told him the coaches would have complete control of the boys. On Friday afternoon the day of the game the team arrived. The football game was played; I think we won. After getting something to eat, the team arrived back at the motel and all went well. The swimming pool closed at 10 pm (a trivial inconvenience for Chester and friends.) At 3 am Chester and friends were in the swimming pool having fun. The owner was a wee bit upset; he did not say anything at the time. However, the next morning when I was paying the tab, he said to me: The boys will always be welcome; leave the parents at home. Fr. Chester,
it really hurts my heart finding out that you have left us. Although you are not among us anymore i know that you are still watching us and your spirit is always with us. Everytime i watch the Snow Ball game on tape i remember the first time i met you at the yard at ND. Your visits over here in Germany and our "European Trip" is still in my mind. Chicago is not the same anymore without you but everytime i visit the city i remember the times with you..
Thinking of you my friend..

Chester,
Unfortunately, it took a while to get the message in Germany.
I also want to say thank you this way that it was allowed me to met you 10 years ago, and that we became friends. The visits in Chicago will never be the same again without your smile and your jokes. I want to say thank you for everything you did and have shown me. I will never forget and it was an honor to know you. May God bless you

Chet,
You were my dad's boss for many years but I never thought of you that way. Maybe it was because you were too busy treating me and my family like royalty with ND tickets, Bulls tickets, etc. I remember 1995, B.C. v. ND, we were heartbroken after the game when Glen Foley hit Pete Mitchell over the middle to set up BC for the winning field goal. After the game you gently leaned over and said, "Don't worry Nicky, we'll get em' next time" Fast forward to 2005 and we are in Tempe watching ND play the Buckeyes, unfortunatley we came out on the short end of that one too, but you again told me, "Nicky, we'll get em' next time". Chet, I was so glad to have known you...there will NEVER be another Chester.

I am quite late in finding out that Chester is gone from us and is now really on the 50 yard line for all the games. I first met Chester on a plane from Chicago to New Orleans going to the Sugar Bowl in 1980. He asked me if I needed a ride to my hotel as he saw me with my ND hat on and said that I talked too loud and that this was a way to shut me up. We became friends and realized soon that our passion for ND football and law enforcement were just two of the things we had in common besides our substantial difference in age. Chester always made time for his friends, and gave everyone women he saw a tender kiss and a great big hug. I think I must have seen 35 ND games over the years because Chester would always call me and ask me "do you need a ticket Jimmy, I take care of you". I can remember my Mom making cookies specifically for the trunk club and Chester telling her you make the best cookies. He was Ed Debevic's best customer during the many years that I managed the place on Ontario and Wells in Chicago. He make everyone laugh with his quick wit and loud and unique laugh and he always seem to punch me in the arm and say "you better get a meal your too skinny". We all have some great Chester moments and we all will cherish these moments till we have our same seat next to Chester on the 50 yard line. Let's make sure we share our thoughts with those that we love while we still have them so we can too laugh as loud as Chester, have a big smile like Chester and enjoy our time together as we did with one of ND's biggest fans. A great friend and one that I am glad we had a chance to meet. I think Chester once said there are no strangers to my tailgate parties, just friends we have never met yet.

I,ve known Chester since 2nd grade at Viz. Terry, Chet and I were together through 8th grade. He was in our Wedding Party in 1960. Chester was one of a kind. I think of Chester with three big "F's"; F for Faith, F for Family (Viz, ND, M.C.) and then "F" for fun and FUN he was. May God bless him and may the memories of Chester live on forever.

I grew up in Visitation (55) I went to Mt. Carmel(59. I knew Chester. Everybody knew Chester. What amazed me over time was that every 10 years or so, I would bump into him and he knew me and my family and would ask about them or relate something about one of them. Always something good to say! He was the 'celebrity', but he always made me feel special that he would even remember who we were. All I know is that he was a very good man, who did a lot of good for a lot of people. An inspiration like his friend Rabbi O'Brien.

To All Who Knew & Loved Chester
We were lucky enough to first meet Chester at a tailgate party before a football game. We attended many more of his tailgate parties over the years and even became members of Chet's Trunk Club. It was always a hoot to see him driving into the Aero parking lot in his big Cadillac with the ND flags proudly flying from the windows. People immediately would surround him. Over the past few years, we would meet him at 7 a.m. on game day and walk over to the student dining hall for breakfast. It seemed no matter where we went with Chester, whether at a home game, an away game or even when we all went to Dublin, Ireland fro the Notre Dame-Navy game, everyone knew Chester. He was a big kid and an even bigger kidder. There will be a big void the next time we're in South Bend without Chester. He will be missed!

Chet,
well you filled up Vis, stopped traffic on the Boulevard and most of the south side, had bag pipers and the Air Force at Holy Seplucher, along with a sound truck playing the ND fight song driving around the cemetery before they laid you to rest. The party afterwords was just as it should have been, and all in all, it was a perfect reflection of your life. Loud, energetic, boisterous and full of faith, goodwill and graciousness. I stand with all who knew you over the last many decades and say "We shall not see your likes again." Imitators, yes, but you were the orginal. Thanks for the tutoring, and teaching all of us to always "Keep the Faith".

Chet:
I have just read 10 pages of praises from devoted friends and they all describe you to a "T". We never knew anyone quite like you and never expect to meet your equal in the future. Our days together at the Russell and NCPERS meetings when you represented the Chicago Police Pension Fund were the best. And then there was your beloved ND.
The high spot for me will always be the win at Tallahassee over FSU although the late rallies over BC at Chestnut Hill were great also.
But the treat for us all was to be in your company. We may search and search but will never find a person so kind, so generous, so warm spirited and so passionate for Notre Dame. It is not hard to understand why there were Mike Cummings, Jim Kilmartin and Angie O'Donnell's in your life. May God bless them for all that they did for you. You did good, Pally, for a "poor kid from the blvd". God bless and "GO IRISH". Chicago will never be the same.

Dear Chester - Thanks for being you. You certainly brightened our days and lightened our loads along the way. Joy is the unfailing sign of God's love being part of someone.

Thanks for all the great memories with you and my grandpa both on and off the field of play or the halls of MC!
Your friendship and mentoring while at Carmel has blessed me with a lifetime of exceptional memories, and provided me, and many many others, an understanding of what true loyalty and true friendship is ment to be!
You epitomize that which we should all strive to become....A good person who tried his best and gave his all to anyone he befriended!
Some of the best memories I have were from the many parties you shared with my family and my grandpa.....I still have your "Get out of jail free" and "Call a Bishop, Cause I'm an important Catholic" cards in my wallet that you gave me at one of my grampa's birthday celebrations!

My first recollection of Chester goes back 50 years when my uncle, Fr. John Grace, formerly of Visitation, brought him over for Christmas at Grandma Grace's house on North Oakley, Chester would dress up as Santa Clause and fling Silver dollars at out heads and wish us a Merry Christmas, we always looked forward to the ride from Matt Igler's back to Grandma riding with Chester in his unmarked squad car, we knew that he'd put on the siren and give us the fastest ride we'd ever have.
Chester was one of those rare individuals that you meet once or twice in a life time that bigger than life, allways giving. The standing joke around our family is that you could go anywhere in the world with Chester and people would come up to him and greet him by name. Going to a Sox game with Chester was like going with a celeberity - - people young and old would call him by name, security guards would pass him through parking lanes and make sure that he was well taken care of.
Chester was a devoute and practicing Catholic who symbolized what a real Catholic gentleman should be - he took his Faith seriously, but never himself.
The old adage that the "good die young" was refuted in the life and times of the kid from the boulevard. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace.

Chester-
Thank you for everything you have given us over the years, the ND tickets and tailgates, your loyalty and friendship, your unbridled passion and your unique sense of humor.Thank you for helping out the hundreds(thousands?) of kids with a couple of bucks or a pair of shoes when they couldn't afford it. Thank you most of all for always telling me and everyone standing around us how much I reminded you of my father, I could never recieve a greater compliment. God speed and God Bless, the "Poor kid from the Boulevard" had a great run and will be missed.

Chester, You are a special person and I truly appreciated the way you looked after my son Brett over the last 4 years at Mount Carmel. Guys like you and Coach Kiska are what made MC the special place that it is. It is unfortunate that future students will not have the privledge of your support. Rest well my friend!

The Mount Carmel Mothers' Club was truly honored to help Chester celebrate his birthday last year at our Fashion Show, "The Wonderful World of Mount Carmel". Chester was proud to "lead off" the family run because Carmel was his family. We know how much he loved the "surprise" by his smile, and even his tears, that day. Chester, thanks for always being there for our boys.
Love, The Mount Carmel Mothers' Club Board '04-'05

Chet,
What a wonderful, and, loving life you have had. And, I am so proud to have shared almost 50 of those years with you.We have laughed, and, we have cried. You have been a father, a brother, and the best friend anyone could ever have had.I will Stand Up and Cheer For Carmel, and, continue to Cheer, Cheer For Old Notre Dame, but, the games will be a little more quiet, and, less fun without you.
In fact, life will be less fun without you.Say hello to all our old pals for me,and save me a seat on the 50.

Pal Chester: Thanks for the memories and your loyalty to Our Lady of the Lake. From coast to coast you guided two generations to the love, warmth and kinship of the extended Notre Dame family. Watch over us from Heaven.

I remember Chester kidnapping us off the corner of 56th and Morgan. "Get in you bums. You're just gonna get in trouble here". Off we would go for the rest of the day, all piled in the back of Chet's car. We would watch him umpire baseball games or just run errands. In bad weather he would open the Vis gym and get out the basketballs. He watched over all of us. Me, Tommy Casey, Mike Cummings, Jack Durkin and the rest of the gang. He was very proud of his "Vis kids" who became policemen. He was one of the finest human beings I have ever known.
