Grandpa Charlie,
May you rest in peace and harmony in that beautiful place where you are now. I love you, and will miss you and cherish the memories I had with you always.

We hadn't seen the obituary and didn't know until the 3rd of April that Charlie had died. I am extremely sorry that we were therefore unable to mourn with all the others in mourning, but our hearts are with the family now and I write to express our sorrow and our deepest sympathy. Charlie was a neighbor to be grateful for, and the untimely snow that came our way yesterday reminds me that whenever there was a sizable snowfall, Charlie and his snowblower cleared the sidewalks of his neighbors as well as his own. He was one of a kind, one of the last of a distinguished World War II generation and one of the best in the neighborhood, at least the second generation to live in his house in Merriam Park, and for a number of years the oldest and otherwise primary senior. When his children (5) and mine (4) were young, the average number on the block must have been 5-6, but somehow they all got along and were friends, and all are still warmly remembered long after they have grown up and moved away. I'll never forget a characteristic intervention by Charlie twenty or so years ago when a permit was being sought to build on a half-lot a house of a height that would have put its neighbors to the west permanently in the morning shade. A number of us residents went to the City offices to complain and plead for a compromise, and Charlie spoke brilliantly for the neighborhood as a whole. The result? Of course, the day was saved and a less high house permitted. The newer house remains a monument to Charlie's memory and will remain so for as long as any of us knows the story and sees the houses as they are. Charlie will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and among them will be the Claytons.

Our hearts go out to DeDe, Pat, Bill and all of the other family members. Your Dad was a great guy who always was ready with a smile. He was a courageous and loving man who surely earned many crowns in heaven.

"May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. And rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand."
