Charles Walker Obituary

Walker Sr., Charles Edward September 21, 1930 - July 29, 2014 Was born September 21, 1930 in Monroe, LA to Louis and Beatrice Walker, both of whom preceded him in death. He was the second oldest of five siblings (Jalisco, Percy, William, Francis, and John). All except John preceded him in death. The family moved to Chicago, IL in 1940. Charles attended Crane High School and after graduating, enlisted in the U.S. Army (October 25, 1951). While serving in the Army, Charles served in the Korean War and earned a Purple Heart and numerous other medals for service beyond the call and duty. He was injured three times while serving in the Army. Upon his return from Korea, Charles was an active participant in the civil rights movement, along with Martin Luther King and other civil rights activists. He was also an active member of Operation PUSH. He worked for the United States Postal Services and various other government agencies until his retirement in 2000. Charles married Katie McKinney on June 27, 1950 and to this union ten children were born: Diane, Alaura, Gerald, Charles Jr., Myra*, Marvin*, Alexander*, Andrew*, Mark*, and Beatrice. Charles married Barbara White on December 9, 1967, and to this union was born one son, David Julian Walker (*preceded him in death). Charles was a loving father and family man, and took his children to church regularly. He was a gun enthusiast, and was an avid traveler, visiting many foreign countries including Brazil, Korea, and England. He was a great proponent of education and a strong supporter for educating and schooling African American students. He believed in treating people with respect and honor, and supported civil rights and housing opportunities, especially for African Americans. he introduced his family to the knowledge of giving and service to the community. He leaves to cherish his memories, two sons, Charles Jr. and David (Joi); two daughters, Alaura and Beatrice; thirty grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one brother, John Robinson; special friend, Brenda Ellerson; a special niece, Victoria Prewitt (Jimmy); and a host of other relatives and friends. Services have already been held.

I believe this is my grandfather. I was really young when my father passed away. I never meet his family. But from reading they information I believe this is my family. Sending love and my condolences.
