Mr. Mingo was my biology teacher at Harlan High School. He was a highly intelligent, extremely knowledgeable, and very kind. I remember him going to the back of the room to sit next to me and asking me where I thought I was having difficulty. No teacher had ever done that, and I was instantly struck by his gentleness and concern. My prayers are with the family. Take your rest, Mr. Mingo. You lived out your purpose well.

I had the honor to work with Charles many years ago when we worked together in the Project Wingspread program (1968-1971) where students from Harlan and H-F used the city of Chicago as a learning platform five days a week. His focus on learning and on life influenced not only the students, but also us, the teachers - Betty S, Clem P, and myself. Unfortunately I just learned of Charles' passing. My condolences to his family but his legacy lives on through the many students that he touched. Stephen Mayheu,( Algoma, WI)

We are lucky to have been on the planet at the same time as this fine man. I taught at DuSable under his charge for 3 years. Charlie Mingo has been and will continue to be an inspiration to me in the work left to be done on this planet. He was proud of his family's accomplishments, caring about the young men and women who came into his care within schools and streets alike, and an example to all of us. He was willing to make deep personal sacrifice for the sake of the struggle. I offer my deepest sympathy to you his family. I still count him as a friend and felt joyous every time I heard from him over the years.

A wonderful man with a kind gentle voice, Mr. Mingo & his loving wife Janet warmly welcome my family and me to our neighborhood some 15+ years ago, inviting me to his home, sharing some of his garden finest produce and giving me advice on how to help my sons excel in this competitive school district. You know it was going to be a good day when saw Mr. Mingo leisurely driving down the street in his red convertible : ), I'm going to miss his warm smile and exuberant spirit, especially at our block party....

Mr. Mingo was my Biology Teacher in 1965. He was nice. He made a deal with me for 2nd period Biology. Since I had Foods/Homemaking as a 1st period class, he said if I cooked the squid that we had to dissect that day, that I wouldn't have to dissect -or- eat it. (Man was I glad!) So I came walking into class with a platter of "Sautéed Squid". My classmates had to dissect a raw squid first, then taste it as prepared by your's truly! I'm told it was kind of sweet. I loved Mr. Mingo for that! I must have had a crazy look on my face when he told us of the up-coming assignment---so he made a wonderful adjustment for me. That's the kind of teacher that he was. He was such a laid-back, nice man. Cherished and Missed.

Charles Mingo and I shared a professional relationship of collegiality that was explicitly united in a common purpose and respect for each other's ability to discuss and work towards ways to improve the education of our youth. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
