I would like to share some of my fondest memories about my Nani (and Nanu too), I hope all that are reading will enjoy.
My grandparents lived across the street from us for 23 years, whenever we needed something it was always "call Nani and see if she has it" whatever was hers was ours - she gave her all to her family, including the food in her freezer that was probably older than me!
I remember the "Weeble Wobbles" sitting on the front porch any given day when the weather was nice, Nanu would whistle at me and Nani would wave when ever I pulled up, I miss that comfort. When we were younger, she would sing “Nina Nonna” to get us to sleep and “Teeter tauter bread and water” to get us to laugh!
All of the males in the family must have been programmed to give her as much grief as possible by smashing her perfect bouffant, teasing her about her big chest and scaring her with any kind of rodents or lizards.
She never called me Gina the first time, I was always "Lis-Gina" just as my brother, father, cousins and uncles were called "Frank-Tom-John-Joe-Carm-Jim!" until she got their name right.
The weeks before Christmas we would go to Nani's and help her make raviolis and cookies, and after a long day of baking we would all sit down and play skit-skat for a penny.
From as far back as I can remember Nani & Nanu's was the place to be on Christmas! The big table in the basement that grew as our families grew - there was always enough room for everyone. Nani was always to the right of Nanu and he was always at the head of the table. The extended family would pack the house after dinner, and the entertainment was endless with such acts as… Little Jimmy singing Friends in Low Places, Uncle Jr. playing the accordion and Nani and her sisters performing a “Sister Act”. Everyone was welcome and had plenty to eat and drink.
There was always enough ‘basta’ and plenty of sweets and the second you walked through the door Nani would try to get you to eat. She cried when we cried, laughed when we laughed and always had a candle lit for us. She gave us strength and taught us that family is all you have.
I know my Nani is happy now, she’s watching over all of us from a front porch on a perfect day with Nanu by her side.

Dear Frank, Carmen, Jim, John, Tom, and Cathy,
Mom is a very special being. It was very powerful to see you around her bed, how much you love her and how much she loves you. Even though it is difficult time now, remember that good souls are reunited with God and the loved ones.... As the story goes:
"A ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says She is gone.
Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large now as when I last saw her. Her diminished size and total loss from my sight is in me, not in her.
And just at that moment, when someone at my side says she is gone, there are others who are watching her coming over their horizon and other voices take up a glad shout - There she comes! "
That is what dying is. An horizon and just the limit of our sight.
Love you all and keep you in my prayers,
St. Jerome

John, Tom & Family, and the Munizzi Family. I know the pain of losing a wonderful Mother my heart is with you. I can only say that the pain will fade and the memories will help to fill the void. I am so glad I had the chance to meet your Mother and share some good time with her. I know she will still be in your life, so when those moments come savor them, smile and remember.
