Carol Stevenson Obituary

Stevenson, Carol Duck (nee Sparrey), passed away at home in her 80th year. Beloved and dedicated mother of Michael C.P.D. (Bernadette) Duck, Patricia Duck, Kathaleen (William) Peltier, Eileen Shawne Duck, Kevin (Suzanne) Duck and Timothy Sparrey, fun loving, spirited grandmother of Michael II, Cassandra, Natalie Duck, Jared, Aubrey, Briana and Salena Sparrey, loyal sister of Leslie Jr. (Fran) Sparrey, Jean Zack, Rae Eileen (Jerry) Noonan and Martha (the late Thomas) Gerry, fond aunt and great-aunt, with fierce determination and a marvelous sense of humor, Carol worked three jobs to raise her six children as a single parent in the housing projects of LeClaire Courts and Trumbull Park Homes. She gave her children immeasurable gifts by teaching them that race, religion and money are not the important things in life. Carol's Creed was: "You are not poor if you know love, take pride in who you are and strive to be your best." Carol worked many years for Trumbull Park Community Center with the head start co-op and teen programs, she became a surrogate parent to many young people; her impact on their lives continues to this day. After retiring from the center, Carol married Thomas Robert Stevenson and returned to her birthplace, the Historic Pullman Landmark District. They enjoyed this community for over 30 years until his death in 2004. Pullmanites fondly recall Carol, whether on her daily walk or sitting on a bench in the Flower Park, visiting with everyone she encountered. She will be remembered for her deep, unwavering and passionate commitment to family, friends and "friends to be" her loss diminishes our world. Visitation at Beverly Ridge Funeral Home, 10415 S. Kedzie, Friday, 3 to 9 p.m. Funeral Saturday, 10:30 a.m. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery. Carol was easily recognized by her colorful hats. In her memory, we ask that you wear a hat to the visitation and funeral. In lieu of flowers, please share a smile, tell a joke or extend an unexpected kindness. 773-779-4411

My deepest sympathy on the loss of your mother, Shawnee and Pat. Your mother must have been a special lady to have two such wonderful daughters. I know how much she must have appreciated your kindness and support these last 5 years. Judy Opat

Our Hearts and Prayers are with the Duck family. I will miss seeing her smile and enjoying the company of all the children in the neighborhood sitting on her front porch enjoying the beautiful weather. Carol introducing me as her neighbor who helped her on a very cold day when our sidewalks were all Icy and she couldn't make it in her home.

We'll miss you Carol

I am sorry to hear about Carol's passing. She was a very kind and loving woman. I still remember the days we used to work at Vienna's together. She could be strict but she was fun to work with and she had a great sense of humor. She always liked seeing my kids and when I saw her in Little green we would talk and my kids and Mike's son would play. I will miss Carol and again I am sorry for your loss.
