Carlotta Kennelly Obituary

Carlotta was special lady. She was warm, gracious, interesting and the most sophisticated person I knew. Marty and I remember wonderful dinner parties with exotic treats and lively conversaton. Going to the Folk Fest was a real treat especially if Ed snuck in some strong "coffee". One time we had great fun throwing cut out red hearts all over the apartment before sloshing thru the snow. Our last memory of her is at John and Heather's wedding where she danced the night away. She will be sorely missed.

My dear sister Carlotta was a deeply sensitive soul, a loving and devoted woman beloved by her family, a woman of natural grace and elegance, a beauty inside and out, one of the beautiful Nelson sisters. She was a dedicated teacher, a lover of the arts, and an intelligent, reflective, and humble woman with a sense of humor and perspective. In a complaining world, she kept her struggles secret. Those who came into our family, like my wife Mary, she welcomed with a sweet solicitude. Those she loved, she embraced with her warm spirit. She was as kindhearted a person as I have ever met.

I have many fond memories of Aunt Carlotta. Her grace, wit, wonderful laughter, delicate feeling and great sense of fun have always meant so much to me. She invited my sisters Joan and Peggy and I several times to stay with her in Hyde Park and a fascinating world opened to us. She would take us for tea at the Walnut room at Marshall Fields and cook a elaborate breakfast for us at “the point’ on Lake Michigan, visit the museums in Chicago and help select vegetables I had never heard of at the grocery store. I am sure it was a lot of work for her but she made it seem so simple and fun.

She created an interest in the world for me with her gifts from different countries and the meals she would cook.

In later years I remember going to concerts and museums with her and then afterward receiving the most gracious letter recalling every detail and how she enjoyed it.
You will be missed dear Miss Carlotta, I will always cherish your memory.

Grandma was the best and will be dearly missed! She always had special treats for us when we stayed at her house like Italian ice and the sugar cereals our Mom wouldn't buy. She loved her work as a special education teacher, and always had artwork from her school kids hanging in her kitchen. We had great times picnicing in Hyde Park, swimming at the beach, and reading the Cat in the Hat before going to bed. The thing I will remember most about Grandma is the way she always listened to everything we had to say with such respect and interest, and her delighted laughter when we said something amusing. She always made me feel special and truly loved. Thanks Grandma.

My wife Hanna and I would like to extend our condolences. Aunt Carlotta was always soft-spoken, friendly, and kind to me. I will never forget her apartment near the University of Chicago, which fascinated me as a child. I only wish I could say that I had known her better.
