Carl Stanley Obituary

Stanley, Carl S. of Evanston ( former long standing Kenilworth resident) born April 19, 1918 in Jewell, Kansas raised in Topeka, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Chicago and later attended the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and with an MBA from the Institute for Management at Northwestern University. He began his career at The Harris Bank in 1940 and took a military leave during the World War II to enter the U. S. Army Air Corps. Serving as a pilot with the rank of captain, he flew more than fifty combat missions in Europe and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with ten clusters. Returning to the Harris Bank in 1945, where he met and married his wife of 56 years Barbara Landon Stanley. Loving father to Philip L. (Fay) Stanley and Patricia L. Stanley. Loving brother to Ruth Johnson, Alice Simon-Strait and Oren Stanley. "Gramps" to Les, Bill, Tina, Josh, Nikki, Erin and Anna, Great-grandfather of four. An Executive Vice President with the Harris Trust and Savings Bank, he was well known in the banking community. His prowess on the golf course and gregarious personality were assets in his dealings within the Chicago business community. He was chosen as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Wilmette bank/First Illinois bank in 1976 where he remained until his "retirement" in 1984. Carl became Treasurer and director at WTTW in the 70's and served as a director on the boards of numerous organizations he was proud to have worked with. He took particular pride in serving as a director of Servicemaster Inc, and in his later years his passion was in serving the North Shore Senior Center where he was a director, Treasurer and finally Chairman. His commitment to the expansion and development of the North Shore Senior Center was something he took great pride in, and was a source of deep personal satisfaction until his final days. Carl Stanley was a man of deep faith. His involvement and participation at the Kenilworth Union Church was unswerving starting in 1957. He taught Sunday school for many years, worked the Rummage sale along with his wife Barbara, served on the church board of directors and as Chairman. He was very proud of the growth in the congregation and the expansion of the church. His faith was of great consolation to him during the difficult illness he grappled with since early June. Carl loved sports. He excelled in many sports and was on the tennis and basketball teams in high school and at the University of Chicago. He spent countless hours on golf courses around the world and had a great passion for the game his entire adult life. He was also an enthusiastic tennis player, and in his retirement years his days often consisted of playing multiple sets of tennis in the morning followed by a round of golf in the afternoon. A big fan of Chicago sports teams Carl, devotedly followed the exploits of the Sox, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks. He was a big Sox fan due to his South Side affiliation with the University of Chicago in his college years and having an apartment on that side of town through the early of marriage before moving North to raise a family. While a big Sox fan he couldn't stand the radio style of Milo Hamilton and Red Rush. Carl loved to watch the Bears on Sundays, but could be heard all around the house yelling at the television when the team showed all to frequent examples of incompetence. Private internment. Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, July20, 4pm at Kenilworth Union Church,211 Kenilworth Ave., Kenilworth. In lieu of flowers please direct donations to the North Shore Senior Center,161 Northfield Rd., Northfield, IL 60093. Arrangements by N.H. Scott & Hebblethwaite Funeral Home 847-998-1020

I was so very sorry to hear about Carl passing away and want to express my sympathy to his family. Carl and I got to know each other as fellow Board members at Executive Service Corps and often sat together sharing lunches and ideas before the meetings began. He was a long-time devoted and honored member of the Board. He will be greatly missed.

Tom and I send our deepest sympathies to you, Barbara. Carl was an extraordinary man, a pleasure to know at the Harris (for Tom) and at the North Shore Senior Center.

To Phil and Patty, my compliments on beautiful expressions of your relationship and regard for your father. The poems were moving, the stories delightful. I would like you to know what utter respect I have for Carl. He became a mentor and more to me at the North Shore Senior Center (I served under him on the Board, succeeded him as Chair) and on the Foundation, providing gentle but clear guidance, sharing his thinking but always asking for the input of others, demonstrating a style that was eminently effective in working with both volunteers and staff. Carl's clear, total commitment led all of us to a higher level, he led by example. Carl always asked how we were, was solicitious of my husband and others, put our needs ahead of his.

While we knew he was ill, his death was a shock. Of course, he was not going to live forever (none of us do), but the actual time was startling. As reflected in the last months of his life and in the Memorial Service, Carl continued to be the gracious, elegant, caring gentleman we all knew. We will miss him terribly.

Thank you all, particularly you, Barbara, for sharing him with us.

Our hearts and prayers are with you.
