Bonnie Mayhew Obituary

Mayhew, Bonnie S. 63, of Willowbrook, IL, answered a call from her Lord to begin a journey of eternal life on October 4, 2008. A lifelong educator of 38 years, Bonnie retired from Curie High School in 2003. Bonnie championed the cause for women's and girl's sports throughout her professional and personal life. After receiving a Bachelors Degree from the Teachers College, she began her career at age 20. Bonnie was the recipient of many awards, but nearest and dearest to her heart was earning "Girl's Basketball Coach of the Year" and a "Golden Apple Award". Bonnie was an inspiration and role model for many of her students. She was a coach of many, but a lifeline for all. Bonnie had a heartfelt passion for sports. She enjoyed playing semi-pro softball, Senior Olympic Volleyball, canoeing and golf. She coached Women's Basketball in the Senior Olympics. She is survived by her parents, Art and Eleanore Mayhew, brothers, Richard and wife Patricia, William and wife Kathy, beloved friend and companion Sally Eisenhart, nieces and nephews, Michael, Marcy, Mark, Christine and Tim, along with many great nieces, nephews and cherished friends. Funeral Wednesday, starting with Visitation, 9 to 10 a.m. at Modell Funeral Home, 7710 S. Cass Ave., Darien, and then processing to Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 S. Garfield Ave., Hinsdale, for an 11:00 a.m. service. Interment Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday, 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Modell Funeral Home. All that know Bonnie are aware of her love of Wildlife and Nature. To that end, we ask that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Sierra Club or Senior Olympics in her name. I was very sorry to hear about Miss Mathew's passing so young. I'd like to offer my condolences to her family. She was my teacher at Hubbard in the early 70's and exuded strength and confidence. She was one of the reasons I majored in Physical education. It sounds like her giving nature continued her entire life. God bless you and your family.

Thank you Bonnie!

I had Miss Mayhew in the 70's at Hubbard High School and I adored her. She gave me confidence to do things I thought I couldn't do. I think she made a difference in a lot of her students lives. Not many like her any more. Her qualities of warmth and open heart will always be remembered and appreciated.

Bonnie was my coach for boys bowling. When no one else wanted us she made the 1972 boys bowling team feel special.
My partner and I finished high in the City Championships that year.
Bonnie.....thanks for the memories.

Miss Mayhem was my basketball coach at Curie from 1985-1989. She made me into a very strong young lady and I appreciated every word she spoke to me. I can still remember her bring very direct and making me look at her when she would speak to me. Ever after I graduated I would still go to the school a speak with her. I remember she took the whole to team to Cary, for an over night. Had the greatest time. I'm writing my condenses because I was speaking to my 15 year old daughter and she plays sports and I will always refer back to Miss Mayhew. She was and still is loved.

The loss of my best friend, Bonnie, has been one of the hardest experiences that I have ever had to go through. Bonnie was my adventure buddy who I shared so many experiences with and that I have so many wonderful memories of. Her loss has been very hard to recover from. My prayers are with her wonderful family and Sally. Bonnie will always live in my heart and soul until I am reunited with her in heaven.

My heart and prayers go out to Bonnie's very special friend, Sally, her special friends Jeff and Pic and to the entire Mayhew family.
I didn't know Bonnie all that well but I know she was loved by all who knew her.
I'm sure she is looking down, smiling and saying: I watching all of you and will continue to be with you but my Lord called and I had to leave.

To the Mayhew Family - I worked in the office at Curie H.S. I knew Bonnie all of 20 years. Bonnie was a wonderful teacher who gave her all to her students. I remember meeting her family at her retirement party. I was shocked to read of her death. My prayers are with you all.

I have known Bonnie for 8 years and have shared a life of experiences, only as Bonnie knows how to do in a very short period of time. She loved life as much as she loved the outdoors, wildlife, animals and all of Gods creation. Bonnie said, when she found out how long she had to live. I'm not ready to die because I still have so much more to learn, experience and do. If it's Gods will to call me home than I will have to be pleased with what I have learned and accomplished.

I will dearly miss my close friend and companion of 8 years. Their were so many roads we still had not traveled and experience together.

Dear Mayhew family and friends,
I want to express my condolences to all of you. Bonnie and I went to high school together and had been very good friends at the time. We lost touch with one another over the years but then was able to rekindle our friendship in 2003 before I moved out of state. We had a very nice lunch together and since then have been in communication via e-mail. I know how passionate she was for wild life preservation and policical injustice prevalent in our government. I will miss her many e-mails expressing her concerns. My heart goes out to all of you and the emptiness you must feel at this time. I lost my husband a year ago this month to lung and brain cancer but I keep my faith in knowing that he is with Almighty God and Jesus as is Bonnie.

Dear Mayhew family and Friends,

Miss Mayhew was TOUGH! But playing basketball in High School (Hubbard) is one of my FONDEST memories!

Even tho I cracked my knuckle a wee bit playing, today it's just a nice reminder to still have right there on my finger after all these years.

It's the one sport I felt I really, really understood!

(plus it was just so much FUN!)

Bonnie carried and exhuded and a very deep inner expectation that girls can do anything they want to. Not because she said so but just because it's true!

She made no secret that she held very high expectations which is a real gift to any girl in high school - however much we might dislike it at the time. (wink)

I'm proud to have known her and to have been her student.

Joyful sympathies on her passing.

Can't help but wonder what she's going to do next!

;)

Dear Mayhew Family & Friends,
You have my deepest sympathies. I only knew Bonnie as Miss Mayhew, a teacher at Hubbard High School, and have not seen her since graduating in the early 1970's. But I remember her well, and will always cherish the love of athletics and sports that she instilled in me. A wonderful teacher and person.

Dear Mayhew family and Sally,
I played volleyball with Bonnie in several Senior Olympics and she always gave it her all but with a smile and congratulations to her worthy opponents. She was a great story teller and I will carry some of her stories and jokes with me as long as I live. The instant you met Bonnie she just warmed you up with her acceptance and humor. The OLO's missed her greatly when she had to take a hiatus from the game but at least some of us got to play with her in Louisville. Bonnie, I'm so glad I got to play and party with you. You will be missed.

Bonnie was my teacher, my coach, but most importantly...my friend. She was there through some of the most difficult times in my life and for that I am forever grateful. Bonnie was a loving and caring person. We all need to remember what she taught us in life and then Bonnie and her spirit will continue to live on. I miss her immensely already.

Dear Mayhew family,
Please accept my sympathy on the loss of Bonnie. I worked with Bonnie at Curie High School for 12 years. She had a great sense of humor and would always joke around with me about being Irish and the "Luck of the Irish." My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Dear Mayhew Family and my Dear Friend Sally,
Bonnie and I shared the same birthday month in December, the sign Sagittarius, every time I seen or spoke with Bonnie we had our own private saying to each other "Sags Sizzle" she would always say "that's right we do". Bonnie was a beautiful, fun, loving, caring person, I will miss her but I will never forget her and in my prayers to her in Heaven I will say each and every time "Sags Sizzle" as she did in life.
