Bitsy Winograd Obituary

Winograd, Bitsy Fell (68) of Wilmette, Beloved wife of Bruce Winograd. Loving mother of Audrey (Tim Lensmire) Appelsies, Ellen (John) Walthour, Jill (Noah) Reister and Joanne (Andrew) Brockington. Proud grandma of Noa and Aliya Appelsies, Naomi, Louis and Elliot Walthour. Cherished sister of Joseph (Karen) Fell, Frank (Jan) Fell and the late Ruthie Wander. Dear sister in law of Herb (Karen) Wander and Julie (Ed) Weil. Loving aunt, cherished cousin and friend. Service Tuesday, 2PM at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield, IL 60093. Interment Memorial Park. Bitsy lived life to the fullest. She was co-chairman of the New Trier High School Centennial in 2001. This past October, her leadership was recognized by her New Trier classmates at her 50th. class reunion. Bitsy also served as past president to Temple Jeremiah sisterhood, served on the board of directors at Encore and More retail shop of the National Council of Jewish Women, and was hosting coordinator for the North Shore Chapter of AFS, host mother to seven foreign exchange students, and worked along side her family in the family retail business. On top of all her community service, she opened her home to family and friends for religious and secular holidays. Bitsy enjoyed tennis, golf, bridge, square dancing, nights at Ravinia and many more leisure activities. Even through her fight with cancer, she embraced life. She wanted her community to know that the strength and prayers from so many helped her get the most out of living even during her battle with ovarian cancer. Memorials in her memory to Midwest Hospice, Temple Jeremiah, American Field Service (AFS) or a donation of blood to Life Source Blood Services would be appreciated. Growing up with Bitsy all the way through school in Winnetka was an important part of my life, and her leadership and inspiration to our class of 1961 at New Trier has kept us all together. A very great woman who touched many lives has passed, and we will miss her terribly. May God bless you all in her family.

Bitsy only came into my life in the spring of 2010, when she pulled NYC alumni of NT '61 together for a brunch. Because of her I both connected and reconnected with members of the class and had a terrific 50th reunion this past October. Her gifts and generosity have not been overstated. Sincere condolences to the family. Neil Berkson

Tom and I met Bitsy and Bruce over a glass of champagne to toast the engagement of our son John and their daughter Ellen. After the wedding, Bitsy said to me, "You and I are family now". She and you Bruce have always warmly welcomed us to your home. We share three of your beautiful grandchildren. It has been said that it is not the length of life that is so important but the joy of living fully every day- Bitsy lived and loved fully every day. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all. She will never be forgotten by her grandchildren- my promise to her when she asked. In love, Cindy and Tom Walthour

Dear Family,
I am still a bit numb after reading the news about Bitsy in the paper yesterday. She was always a very dear friend to me and I am so sorry that we did not keep in touch.
I hope you remember me? Stuart Whitman (or as you all use to call me "Stuart Streisand").

Much love to all of you and I hope we can touch base some day, share memories and catch up on what has been going on.

Love, Stuart

Fun trips, bridge, parties, and interesting conversations. Life didn't happen to Bitsy; Bitsy ate life. To quote another of her friends, there was nothing bitsy about her. She helped us learn how to live, and how to die. We already miss her a lot.

Though we met her only a few times, we remember well Bitsy's lust for life and generosity. She was the kind of person you felt you could hug right away. And there is so much of her in our friend Ellen. I imagine Bitsy was proud of Ellen's big heart and many accomplishments. We are sorry for your family's loss. Love, Jane and Scott McLean

Ellen and family,
What a terrific role model your mother was for you and your sisters. Whenever I would see her at the farmer's market or at the Jewel she would eagerly tell me all that you were doing. She
was thrilled about your Spain trip even with all that was going on with her own health. Tell lots of stories about her and listen to the many you will hear about her. I hold you in my prayers today and in the days to come.

Dear Bruce and Girls,
Although the distance prohibits me from standing at your side on Tuesday, Miff's and my hearts will be with you. Bitsy (or "Roomie" as we called each other after sharing our hotel room at the UAHC Biennial in Atlanta many years ago) will continue to inspire me to be a more thoughtful, welcoming and generous person. These are among the countless qualities that this courageous lady owned.
May her memory be for a blessing to those of us who were lucky enough to travel alongside her on the many roads that she graced in her short but inspirational life.
God bless.

Bitsy was an inspiration. Her love of life and concern for others was always present. Even the photo in the Tribune was classic of her. I'll miss her. My most sincere condolences to all the family.

Bruce, To you and all of your family we send our deepest sympathies. Bitsy was such a bright light for everyone she touched, such a special lady. She will be sorely missed.

The Ovarian Group at the Cancer Wellness Center had a special relationship with Bitsy. She brought us so much, such courage and strength and honesty and pure emotion. I will remember what she shared and how we all bonded. We too shall miss her terribly.

Go in peace and know you cared for Bitsy magnificently --- and she so appreciated it.

To Bitsy's Daughter Ellen--many prayers and much love to you and your family from Joel's mother, Sarah Criner.
